Ethan Slater shared his thoughts on why his fellow Wicked stars, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, share such strong emotional moments together.
In preparation for the film's debut on Friday, November 22, Grande and Erivo participated in several joint interviews to help promote the movie.
Slater, who portrays a Munchkin character named Boq in the film, recently shared with Today that he and his co-stars often make light of their tendency to get emotional during interviews. “It’s really amusing,” he remarked. “After a long day of promotional events, they’ll say, ‘We ended up crying another hundred times. People must be tired of it.’ But I believe it comes from a sincere place.”
Wicked, which draws from the Broadway musical, is also inspired by Gregory Maguire’s 1995 book, Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. This story serves as a prequel to L. Frank Baum's 1900 classic, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, as well as its film version from 1939.
The narrative revolves around Glinda the Good Witch and Elphaba, who is known as the Wicked Witch of the West. Portrayed by Grande and Erivo, the story explores their encounter at Shiz University.
“I believe it’s a deeply emotional experience to explore characters who undergo such significant journeys,” Slater remarked. “It’s been a lengthy and intense journey. Engaging in this way creates a strong connection with those around you.”
Although Slater has been with Grande for more than a year, he believes that the singer of "Love Me Harder" and the actor from Harriet share a special connection, almost like soul mates.
“Their friendship is genuine and profound, shaped by the experiences they've shared through their work. I believe they're taking the time to discuss and think about it even as they're still actively involved,” he noted.
Slater openly acknowledged that he has shed tears during discussions with the media about the film. He recalled a particularly touching moment when he was with his co-star Marissa Bode, who portrays Elphaba's younger sister and is the first actor to take on the role while using a wheelchair.
He mentioned that he began to get emotional when the interviewer brought up something said about Bode.
A comment mentioned, “Marissa, you inspire me. I use a wheelchair and have always dreamed of being an actor. Watching you made me believe I can chase my aspirations.” Slater highlighted how crucial representation is, and coupled with Marissa's stunning performance in the film, it was a deeply touching moment.
"It's amazing to witness the difference it makes and to be involved in her journey. I'm truly honored."
