Critics' Choice Awards 2023

Awards season is in full swing. Last week, we saw the return of the Golden Globes, and this weekend, the Critics' Choice Awards took place at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles, where the best in film and television was celebrated once again.

Perhaps a slightly more low-key event than the likes of the Globes and the Oscars, the Critics' Choice Awards still always offers up plenty of red-carpet drama. This year saw established names such as Janelle Monaé, Viola Davis and Michelle Yeoh excel when it came to their wardrobes, while a number of up-and-comers also turned heads for all the right reasons.

Below, we round up our 10 favourite looks from the evening. If you want to see more from the Critics' Choice Awards red carpet, head this way.

Janelle Monaé in Vera Wang

Janelle Monaé proved that the sheer trend does work for high-end red-carpet events in her clingy Vera Wang gown. The black design featured a dramatic fishtail train, a high neckline and chic cut-out detail at the hips.

Danielle Deadwyler in Louis Vuitton

Embracing a dose of sparkle for the evening was Danielle Deadwyler, who wore a sequin, silver gown by Louis Vuitton with dramatic slits.

Elle Fanning in Alexander McQueen

Elle Fanning loves to have fun with her red-carpet looks, and for the Critics' Choice Awards, she was not afraid to embrace a little volume. The actress chose a cream bustier gown with plenty of structure and cut-out detail from Alexander McQueen's most recent collection.

Niv Sultan in Saint Laurent

Chic, simple and undeniably elegant, you can't go wrong with Saint Laurent – and Niv Sultan proved that on this red carpet. The actress wore a sleek black halter-neck gown by the house, which featured a hood, teaming it with hoop earrings and a slicked-back bun.

Michelle Yeoh in Oscar de la Renta

Michelle Yeoh is the woman of the moment, and she is dressing for it. The actress looked spectacular in a black strapless gown by Oscar de la Renta which featured a dramatic pink cape attached, complete with ruffles and a long train. Perfection.

Monica Barbaro in Del Core

It is always a daring move to wear a print on the red carpet, but Monica Barbaro's floral design by Del Core was one of our favourite looks of the night. The one-shouldered gown was structured but swishy and made for a beautiful silhouette as she posed for cameras.

Viola Davis and Valentino, a dream combination. The actress looked beautiful in a brown sequin caped dress by the house, which was custom designed for her, and featured a subtle cut-out detail on the shoulder.

Anna Sawai in Acne Studios

New Zealand actress Anna Sawai is making a name for herself on the red carpet – and last night's look (a partly sheer, tan ballgown by Acne Studios) was a perfect choice.

Anya Taylor-Joy always commits to, and always executes, a real look – and this was certainly the case for the Critics' Choice Awards. She chose an ankle-skimming but voluminous gown by Dior that was completely sheer and featured delicate embroidery, adding a dramatic updo to the Fifties-inspired ensemble.

Angela Bassett in Christian Siriano

When it comes to award season, we love a big gown. Few opted for one at this year's Critics' Choice Awards, but Angela Bassett brought the drama. She wore a strapless velvet ballgown by Christian Siriano, which featured peplum hems and a long train.
