Live Leeds Covid news as government set to announce travel green list

Portugal, Iceland, Malta, Israel and Gibraltar are expected to make the cut

Holidaymakers are expected to find out today which countries have been added to the travel green list.

The government is due to announce destinations that can be visited without quarantining this summer, with Portugal, Iceland and Malta expected to make the list.

Once restrictions ease further on May 17, travel will be permitted again but the government is introducing a traffic light system to make it safe.

It comes after scientists are stepping up preparations for an autumn booster vaccination campaign to protect against a third wave of coronavirus.

Vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi said scientists are looking at a range of options, including new jabs to protect against variants or mixing the types of injections given, so if a patient had AstraZeneca for their initial doses they could be given Pfizer as a booster.

According to the latest data, Yorkshire currently has six of the ten worst Covid infection areas.

The figures, for the seven days to May 1, are based on the number of people who have tested positive for Covid-19 in either a lab-reported or rapid lateral flow test, by specimen date.

Selby is fourth worst followed by Barnsley, Doncaster, Wakefield, Kirklees and Bradford.
