While watching Anthony Joshua's victorious performance at 'The Day of Reckoning' event in Riyadh, Conor McGregor expressed interest in fighting either in a boxing match or UFC bout against Manny Pacquiao. McGregor made multiple mentions of the Philippine boxer as he eagerly expressed his desire to compete against him.
It's been awhile since McGregor last fought and it was a painful loss to Dustin Poirier where he ended up with a broken leg in July 2021. However, McGregor decided to take action by signing up for the United States Anti-Doping Agency's (Usada) testing in October with the hope of making a comeback in the octagon.
In February, news came out that McGregor, who is 35 years old, would have a fight with Michael Chandler within the year. However, this did not happen and there is still no clear indication of when the Irish fighter, who has previously battled boxing champion Floyd Mayweather, will make his comeback to combat sports.
McGregor was sitting alongside a confused-appearing Cristiano Ronaldo on the sideline for the match that featured Joshua's impressive victory over Otto Wallin and Deontay Wilder's unexpected loss to Joseph Parker. While watching the fights, McGregor heatedly expressed his desire to compete against Pacquiao. However, the rules, weight division, and Pacquiao's willingness to fight appeared to be areas of concern for McGregor.
McGregor yelled at Ronaldo, expressing his love for Manny and requesting him to develop courage. McGregor urged Ronaldo to convey the message to Manny and challenge him to a fight in a heavier weight category.
Why wouldn't he? He is the one who chose this sport. If he expects me to lower my weight, then he should allow me to showcase more of my skills.
"I ought to have the ability to kick and grapple. Wouldn't that be impartial? Question him, is he cowardly or brave? Is Manny courageous or cowardly?"
During the evening, McGregor provided various interviews in which he expressed his opinions, one of which was with Derek Chisora, who had previously challenged for the heavyweight world title.
"What do you think of me fighting Manny in Saudi? Does that idea interest you?" McGregor asked Chisora.
Don't you believe that since boxing is Manny's sport, he should be required to compete at my weight? Doesn't this seem like the action of a true gentleman compared to that of a coward?
During a Talksport interview, he hinted at his frustration with the sluggish pace of his return to the UFC and expressed a readiness to make a comeback in the world of boxing.
In simpler terms, McGregor mentioned that people in Saudi Arabia are discussing Manny, but in the UFC, nobody is discussing him. Thus, the focus among individuals in Saudi Arabia is on Manny, with no interest in him within the UFC.
Offer me something. I was expected to return in April, but it was scheduled for December initially!
I have sold more than all the other competitors in this game combined. I am receiving a unique level of treatment that has never been seen before in the history of combat sports.
Based on my journey and accomplishments, I believe I deserve to be given more opportunities and recognition. I have been eagerly anticipating this and my tolerance for waiting any longer is dwindling.
