Postal workers fight for an activist union

Communication Workers Union

A group of activists is vying for roles within the Communications Workers Union (CWU). The grassroots team named "Union Strong, Union Active" is competing for various high-ranking positions, including the presidency.

In an interview with Green Left Radio, CWU representative Anthony Veal revealed that the management had not effectively challenged the issues related to wages and working conditions. Amid the COVID-19 crisis, postal employees were forced to complete twice the number of delivery routes per day (from one to two), while a significant 50% of the workforce was unfortunately let go.

Furthermore, postal employees were not consulted or included in the decision-making process regarding a revised Memorandum of Understanding that significantly and negatively impacted their working conditions beyond the terms laid out in their existing agreement.

Veal described how the collective's efforts to promote greater union engagement stemmed from the unofficial organization "Frustrated Postal Workers Unite Immediately".

"Individuals would call me and express, 'I've been a part of the association for a span of 25 years and recently decided to withdraw my membership due to a lack of personal gain.' It deeply saddens me and my utmost desire is to restore it to its intended purpose."

The campaign group has encountered obstacles due to a lack of affiliations and assets from the higher-ups.

"If you lack organization, then you become chaotic. You find yourself alone and vulnerable, easily identifiable. You are easily misled. The key is to arrange, arrange, arrange!" Veal stressed.

The voting period concluded on June 30th. The outcome will be published on this page. Discover additional details at this location.
