Colin from Accounts season two review – the smash-hit Aussie comedy is better than ever

Colin From Accounts

In my assessment of the initial season of Colin from Accounting, the humor brought to life by Harriet Dyer and Patrick Brammall, a married duo, was consistently amusing, genuine, insightful, compassionate, and truly fantastic. I was apprehensive about the follow-up season, but I am thrilled to share that all the elements that made it excellent have returned - and the latest episodes are proving to be even better.

The new season of the show picks up shortly after Ash and Gordon gave Colin to a new family, only to regret their decision soon after. The new family refuses to give Colin back, so Ash and Gordon are now following them around, trying to win back their pet. The family keeps telling them that they should accept the situation and move on, even suggesting that they should have a baby instead.

Without Colin around, their evenings are empty, leading to unpleasant thoughts and conversations. They wonder if they have enough similarities to sustain their relationship, or if the age difference will eventually be a problem. Gordon's boxing bag in his apartment seems to be just for show now. As he mentions, time changes things and makes even our sports equipment useless. Desperate measures are taken to retrieve Colin, including possibly kidnapping him from the child who has taken him for a walk.

I'm not giving away any surprises, but I must share that Colin is reunited with his original owners by the end of the initial episode. However, a new problem arises involving Yvette (Annie Maynard), some math, and another visit to Gordon's skilled doctor - who can often be found snacking while chatting about his patient's recovery from testicular cancer in the previous season. "I'd love to assist you, Gordon," he says happily, while sitting at his desk enjoying what I hope is a nod to one of Australia's best meme creators - a tasty Chinese meal. "Unfortunately, my computer isn't working."

In the meantime, Chiara, the co-owner of the small brewery, has partly left her marriage to be with Ash's close friend Megan. Brett, the bartender, is being pressured by his parents to move out of their home, resulting in a surprise appearance by Kevin Bacon. Ash's mother, Lynelle, is still under the influence of her unsettling boyfriend, Professor Lee. Gordon's brother, Heavy, shows up and causes trouble. "He loves causing drama," Gordon remarks, and he certainly does.

The second season of the show continues to strike the right balance between funny conversations, heated arguments, and genuine emotions. This mix was what made the first season so enjoyable and successful worldwide, earning numerous awards and nominations. One memorable scene involves Gordon catching Chiara taking revealing photos for Megan in the beer cooler room. He quickly understands her choice of location and responds with a humorous, "Logical!" This moment not only showcases their strong friendship but also highlights Gordon's calm demeanor and Chiara's neurotic behavior.

What's great about Ash is that they are a genuine and relatable character, not the typical stereotype we often see in romantic comedies. This new season delves deeper into their emotions and allows the supporting characters to really shine and grow. It also raises tougher questions, like the challenges of building a strong relationship, the uncertainty of future rewards, and the impact of timing and circumstances on success. Should we let our past influence our present relationships? Can it give us insight into who our partner truly is or how they have changed over time? These are the thoughtful themes explored in the show.

Dyer and Brammall complement each other perfectly - they bring different energies to the table but are equally captivating. They both excel in delivering witty remarks and hard-hitting truths, showing their unity as creators with a deep understanding of their characters, their journeys, and motivations. Once again, their collaboration results in exceptional writing, making it a delight to watch.
