Colin from Accounts Season 2 on BBC 2 review: still as captivating as ever

Colin From Accounts

Many popular TV shows that are now considered classics didn't receive much attention when they first aired. Dad's Army, The Office, Gavin and Stacey, and even Fawlty Towers were all slow burns, initially not catching on with audiences.

No one had any expectations for Colin From Accounts, an Australian show with unfamiliar actors Patrick Brummell and Harriet Dyer. They played the characters Gordon and Ashley, a couple struggling to make ends meet.

It was unexpected, but it worked. The unique and unusual tale of two single people brought together by a chance car accident and a strangely injured dog named Colin was a big hit last year. Critics loved how the characters showed their true selves, even if some viewers were just shocked by their actions. Some people found the show endearing, while others found it distasteful. But no matter what, it was captivating enough to be successful.

The second season is beginning this week and essentially it's a more intense version of the first season. Ashley is still a slow-moving intern at the hospital, Gordon is still the disorganized owner of a somewhat trendy bar in Sydney, and they continue to have a back-and-forth dynamic in the show, wondering if they will make it or not in a whimsical manner.

The latest blog post from Joel Pratley features a collaboration with BBC, CBS Studios, and Paramount+ in 2024.

Similar to the first season, this series may not have a lot of funny moments, but it is still very interesting. Each episode is full of suspense and often cringe-worthy as one of the characters embarrasses themselves in a dramatic way. There is a real sense of tension that makes us care about the characters more than we realize. The fact that they are actually married in real life adds authenticity to their bickering, making it feel natural and not forced. As you watch each episode, you can't help but wonder why these characters are together, which adds an interesting dynamic to their relationship.

The couple was initially advised to use milder language, but they declined, preferring to keep the show authentic to their own standards. They also aimed to portray the true dynamics of urban relationships in Australia.

Dyer explained, "I declined adding any foreign words in order to maintain the Australian authenticity. If viewers need to search for definitions or rewind to understand, that's ok. Watching the show should be like going for a run, a way to release stress. It's important to express yourself without impacting our bond."

The performance is fantastic and meets expectations in every way. If you liked the previous season, then you should definitely watch this one without any doubt. It truly captures the essence of Australia, whether it's slow-paced or not.

The latest season of Colin From Accounts is now available to watch on BBC 2 and iPlayer.
