Coldplay shows in Hull prompt call for city-wide festival

There are proposals for a citywide music festival to be organized in Hull to align with Coldplay's concerts next year.

The band revealed that they will perform shows at Craven Park on August 18 and 19, 2025, before moving on to Wembley.

Paul Lakin, the CEO of Hull KR, the rugby league team that operates out of Craven Park, expressed his excitement.

He claimed it would be "the most impressive event" the city had ever experienced.

The stadium has welcomed many major performances, including a sold-out show from the local favorites The Beautiful South when Hull was designated as City of Culture in 2017.

Other notable artists who have taken the stage include The Who, Little Mix, Rod Stewart, and Tom Jones.

"Nonetheless, this is something extraordinary," Mr. Lakin stated. "Coldplay will be featuring their complete production, just like what you would see at Wembley Stadium. There will be no compromises or cutbacks."

"As a city, we should fully welcome this idea, which I’m confident we will, and we might even consider organizing a week-long music festival."

Next summer, Coldplay will only be playing in Hull and London, making them the exclusive cities in the UK and Europe for their concerts.

Mr. Lakin mentioned that he would collaborate with city officials to guarantee that the events would be a great success.

Mike Ross, the head of the city council led by the Liberal Democrats, remarked, "Having a globally recognized band like Coldplay perform in Hull shows just how much the city has transformed into a hub for culture and tourism."

Hull boasts a vibrant music scene, and we're excited to collaborate with Hull Kingston Rovers and other partners to create a memorable event for the city—one that will be cherished for years ahead.

Daren Hale, head of the Labour opposition group, criticized the council's "underwhelming" communication, stating that it fails to properly convey the significance of this major moment for Hull's status as an important location for live music.

Coldplay announced that they will donate 10% of the earnings from their performances in Wembley and Hull to the Music Venue Trust, an organization dedicated to assisting small music venues and emerging artists.

Tickets for pre-sale will go on sale on Thursday, September 26, followed by a general sale starting at 9:00 AM BST on Friday, September 27.

Coldplay is set to unveil their 10th studio album, titled Moon Music, in October. The band has stated that this album will be their most environmentally conscious release to date.
