The initial cold weather payments for 2024 have been activated as snowfall covers communities throughout the UK and temperatures drop significantly.

Some areas of the country may see up to 15cm of snowfall, prompting the Met Office to release multiple yellow weather warnings for snow and icy conditions.

To assist individuals during frigid spells like the ones we experience, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) offers a cold weather payment program for eligible households.

You will make a single payment of £25 for each week when the temperature in your location drops to zero degrees or lower.

About 10,000 individuals in 18 different postcode regions are set to receive the payment in the next few weeks. Out of these areas, 12 are located in Cumbria, four are in Northumberland, and two are situated along the border between Scotland and England.

Everything you need to understand about the program is right here:

"Am I Qualified For Cold Weather Payment?"

You qualify for the payment if you receive any of the items listed below:

You need to reside in a location that has had at least seven consecutive days of either no temperatures above freezing or below freezing. If you’d like to find out if your postcode qualifies, the government offers a useful tool for that.

The DWP has its own tools to check temperatures in every UK postcode. If you don't agree with their decision, you can appeal directly to the department.

If you reside in Scotland, you won't be able to participate in this program because the Scottish government has recently introduced a new initiative called Winter Heating Payments, which has taken the place of the previous scheme.

When Can I Expect My Payment?

If you qualify, you will receive these payments without needing to apply. They should be deposited directly into the same bank account where you currently receive your benefit payments, typically within 14 working days after the cold weather period ends.

If you think you qualify for the payments but haven’t received them, it’s a good idea to get in touch with the DWP.
