Cold Weather Payment

Cold Weather Payment: What is it?

Cold Weather Payment is a government scheme which provides some extra financial support to eligible recipients during periods of cold weather. This payment is made to people who receive certain benefits and allowances, and who live in an area that has experienced low temperatures for a certain period of time.

The payment is made automatically to those who qualify, and there is no need to apply for it. The amount of the payment is £25 for each seven-day period of very cold weather, which is defined as an average temperature of zero degrees Celsius or below. The aim of the scheme is to help people who may struggle to pay their heating bills during the winter months, and to ensure that they can keep their homes warm and comfortable.

Who is eligible for Cold Weather Payment?

To be eligible for Cold Weather Payment, you must be in receipt of one of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit (only if you meet certain criteria)

You must also live in an area where a Cold Weather Payment has been triggered. This happens when the average temperature falls, or is forecast to fall, to zero degrees Celsius or below for seven consecutive days. You do not need to apply for the payment – if you are eligible, it will be paid automatically into your bank account.
