CNN installs website paywall

As cable TV audiences and earnings decline, CNN has introduced a paywall, requiring some users to pay $3.99 monthly to access their website. This strategy aims to create a new source of digital income. This development follows the trend of various publications that have successfully implemented subscription-based models.

“Beginning today, we are requesting that users in the United States subscribe to a nominal recurring fee for unlimited access to CNN.com's high-quality articles,” stated Alex MacCallum, CNN’s executive vice president of digital products and services.

Typically, a person visiting CNN's website, who might read just a handful of articles each month, won't be asked to pay right away. As MacCallum explained, "Users will only be encouraged to subscribe after they’ve read a specific number of free articles." Those who do subscribe will not only gain unlimited access to CNN.com’s content but will also enjoy perks such as exclusive election coverage, original documentaries, a carefully chosen daily roundup of our standout journalism, and a reduced number of digital advertisements.

Meanwhile, Reuters has announced that full access to its website and the newly updated app will now be priced at $1 per week or $4 per month.
