Pierce Brosnan supports the idea of Cillian Murphy playing the legendary character of James Bond.

The Irish actor, who is 70 years old and played the famous spy in four films between 1995 and 2002, was recently asked about his opinion on who should succeed Daniel Craig after he officially retired from the role in 2021.

According to Brosnan, Cillian would be an outstanding candidate to take on the role of James Bond in the movie "On His Majesty's Secret Service." The statement was made by Brosnan on Thursday (7 March) during the Oscar Wilde Awards in Los Angeles.

Murphy, who is 47 years old, stated that "the ship has sailed." When Brosnan's suggestion was brought up, the Oscar nominee responded by saying that he is a bit too mature for that option. This was revealed during an interview with Variety.

The gossip train has been busy churning out theories about who will take over the lead role in the upcoming 26th James Bond movie, since Craig, who is currently 56 years old, stepped away from the franchise following his portrayal in No Time to Die, released in 2021.

There are several actors who have been mentioned as possible top contenders for the role of James Bond. Some of these famous names include Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, Regé-Jean Page, and Paul Mescal. Additionally, Greta Gerwig has suggested Kingsley Ben-Adir, from the film Barbie and Bob Marley: One Love, would also be a great fit for the role. Interestingly, there was also speculation last year that there could be two actors chosen to play the role, with Bond 26 featuring "two 007s – one younger and one older".

No official announcement has been made and the movie's premiere date has not been determined yet.

are among my favorite Irish actors. Both have gained international recognition for their exceptional talent in acting. Pierce Brosnan is known for his role as James Bond in four films, while Cillian Murphy is famous for his performances in "Peaky Blinders" and "Inception". As an Irish person, I am proud to see my fellow countrymen excelling in the global film industry. They have brought much attention and admiration to Ireland, not just for their acting abilities, but also for their representation of the Irish culture. I hope to see more Irish actors rise to fame and continue to showcase the talent and uniqueness of our country on the big screen.

The person who takes on the role next will become part of a group of talented actors who have played James Bond. The very first actor to portray James Bond on the big screen was Sean Connery, and was then followed by David Niven in a 1967 parody of Casino Royale.

Starting with Connery, the Bond production under license has presented the characters portrayed by George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Brosnan and Craig.

Brosnan initially made his way into the James Bond universe with his appearance in the film GoldenEye in 1995. He continued playing the iconic character in three subsequent films, Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World is Not Enough (1999), and Die Another Day (2002).

Soon after, Craig took on the part and marked his first appearance as James Bond in 2006's Casino Royale. He proceeded to star in Quantum of Solace (2008), Sky Fall (2012), Spectre (2015), and No Time to Die (2021).

Currently, Murphy is experiencing the pinnacle of his career. He is the preferred contender to receive the Best Actor accolade at the upcoming Sunday event for his protagonist portrayal in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer. The role has already earned him recognition and accolades such as a Bafta, Golden Globe, and SAG award.

Nolan's movie about the atomic bomb has received an impressive 13 nominations for the 96th Oscars, which includes the categories of Best Picture and Best Director.
