Rapid Recap: Caleb Williams, Bears offense shine in win over Jaguars

Chicago Bears

LONDON – Caleb Williams achieved a personal best by throwing four touchdown passes, connecting with Cole Kmet twice and Keenan Allen twice, helping the Bears secure an impressive 35-16 victory over the Jaguars on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Williams connected on 23 out of 29 throws for a total of 124.4 yards, achieving a passer rating of 124.4. He also ran for 56 yards on four attempts, helping the Bears move to a 4-2 record with their third consecutive victory.

The inexperienced quarterback came close to throwing his fifth touchdown in the fourth quarter with a 9-yard pass to DJ Moore. However, after reviewing the play, officials determined that Moore was stopped just short of reaching the end zone, inside the 1-yard line.

The Bears' defense put in another solid showing, holding the Jaguars to just 278 yards. They also made two turnovers and recorded four sacks.

D'Andre Swift delivered another impressive performance, gaining 91 yards and scoring one touchdown on 17 attempts, and he also made four receptions for 28 yards. Kmet topped the Bears' receiving stats with five catches totaling 70 yards, which included touchdown grabs of 31 and 2 yards.

Following the Jaguars' (1-5) initial scoring drive, where Cam Little kicked a 30-yard field goal to put them ahead 3-0, the Bears responded at the start of the second quarter.

Williams connected with a wide-open Kmet for a 31-yard touchdown pass, putting the Bears ahead 7-3 with 11:07 remaining in the first half. After deceiving the defense with a fake screen pass to the left and then another to the right, Williams launched the ball down the middle to Kmet. Kmet managed to shake off one tackle and pulled another defender with him as he lunged towards the end zone, stretching the ball over the goal line.

On their next drive, the Bears moved the ball from their own 5-yard line to the Jaguars' 41-yard line, thanks in part to a 28-yard connection between Williams and Rome Odunze. However, on a crucial third-and-1 play, Williams attempted a long pass to Moore, which was picked off by safety Andre Cisco at the 7-yard line.

The Bears expanded their advantage to 14-3 when Williams threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Kmet with just 13 seconds remaining in the first half. This was their second touchdown link of the game, concluding a remarkable 10-play, 85-yard drive that featured impressive runs by Williams covering 23 and 19 yards, as well as a crucial 10-yard pass to Allen on a third-and-5 situation.

After managing only seven yards in the first quarter, the Bears made a significant comeback in the second quarter, racking up 216 yards. In the first half, Williams successfully threw 12 out of 15 passes, accumulating 128 yards and connecting for two touchdowns.

Right at the start of the second half, T.J. Edwards knocked the ball loose from tight end Evan Engram following a 24-yard catch. Elijah Hicks then scooped up the fumble and took it back for a 19-yard return to the Jaguars' 41-yard line.

The Bears took advantage of the turnover when Williams threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Allen on third-and-goal, increasing their lead to 21-3 with 11:22 remaining in the third quarter. This touchdown followed an 11-yard catch by Allen on third-and-8 that kept the drive alive, and Swift added 19 yards with a screen pass to reach the 9-yard line.

The Jaguars narrowed the gap to 21-10 when Trevor Lawrence connected with receiver Gabe Davis for a 21-yard touchdown pass midway through the third quarter.

The Bears responded when Williams connected for his fourth touchdown pass of the game, throwing his second one to Allen. This time, it was a flawless 3-yard fade that brought the score to 28-10 right at the start of the fourth quarter.

The defense achieved its second turnover when Josh Blackwell, who stepped in at nickel after Kyler Gordon left the game due to a hamstring injury, made a sliding interception on a pass intended for Lawrence. He returned the ball 10 yards to the Jaguars' 36-yard line.

The Bears took advantage of the turnover, increasing their lead to 35-10 with Swift's 1-yard touchdown run at the start of the fourth quarter.

Lawrence capped off the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Davis, bringing the score to 35-16 with 6:58 left on the clock.

After winning their third game in a row, the Bears will take a break before they play again on November 27 against the Commanders in Washington.
