Report | Wolves 2-6 Chelsea

Chelsea

Wolves scored two goals, one by Cunha at the 27th minute and another by Strand Larsen at the 45+6 minute. Chelsea, on the other hand, scored six goals with Jackson scoring at the 2nd minute, Palmer at the 45th minute, Madueke at the 49th, 58th, and 63rd minute, and Felix at the 80th minute.

During an exciting first half, Wolves suffered a disappointing 6-2 loss to Chelsea in their first home game of the 2024/25 season at Molineux.

Chelsea had the lead two times with goals from Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer. However, Wolves managed to equalize both times before halftime. Matheus Cunha scored the first goal with a pass from Rayan Ait-Nouri, making it 1-1. Jorgen Strand Larsen then scored his first goal for the club by turning in Toti's header to make it 2-2.

Nevertheless, their performance was marred by defensive errors in the second half. The turning point came when Noni Madueke moved inside and scored a goal that was deflected past Jose Sa. The player from the opposing team was able to take advantage of the space he was given on the Wolves left side and added two more goals to complete a hat-trick.

The visitors scored one last goal, making it eight goals in total for them. Joao Felix was the one to score, wrapping up a challenging first game of the season at Molineux for Gary O'Neil's team.

If the coach wanted to play defensively at the beginning, that plan was quickly thrown out the window. When Madueke tested Sa with a shot, Chelsea earned a corner that they made the most of. Cunha's deflection was met by Jackson, who easily headed the ball into the net after just two minutes.

The Wolves reacted well, but Yerson Mosquera could have tied the game before ten minutes had passed. Cunha delivered a great pass to Mosquera, who was able to jump the highest in the penalty area. Unfortunately, his header just missed the post, giving Chelsea a lucky break.

The Wolves gained confidence from the opening goal, but the quick pass from Lemina to Larsen didn't count as a goal because Larsen was offside. They had connected before and Larsen's cross was almost turned into a goal by Cunha shortly after.

Nevertheless, the man was determined to score the equalizer he had earned before the thirty minute mark. Jean-Ricner Bellegarde got the ball back in the middle of the field and Wolves were ready to attack. Ait-Nouri moved forward in his usual unconventional style, but instead of passing to Hee Chan Hwang, he passed the ball to Cunha, who skillfully scored over Sanchez.

The Wolves team was doing well at that time, especially when Lemina maneuvered through the Chelsea midfield and passed the ball to Matt Doherty. Doherty then made a clean pass to Cunha, who took a shot that Levi Colwill bravely blocked with his body, deflecting it onto the top of the crossbar.

But then, it was the visitors who scored next. Joao Gomes shot wide of Robert Sanchez's goal, but the goalkeeper quickly kicked the ball down the field. When Jackson took advantage of Mosquera's mistake, he passed to Palmer who then scored over Sa and put Chelsea back in the lead.

At the end of a hectic first half, Wolves managed to equalize before halftime. Ait-Nouri took a free-kick that was headed back into the crowded penalty area by Toti. Strand Larsen then extended his leg to redirect the ball past Sanchez and into the goal, making it 2-2 at halftime.

At the midway point of the game, the score is even at 2-2 between Wolves and Chelsea.

Although it was entertaining for those not supporting either team, both sides struggled with their defense in the second half. Wolves were the first to be punished when Palmer passed the ball to Madueke, who cut inside and shot with his left foot. The ball deflected off Ait-Nouri and went into the net.

Next, the Algerian player found himself isolated in the center of the field, leaving Wolves vulnerable on their left side once more. Chelsea took advantage of this opportunity when Palmer passed to Madueke, who scored between Sa's legs to make it 4-2.

Things got even more difficult for the home team. Joao Gomes lost the ball to Enzo Fernandez in a risky area, and Chelsea quickly moved the ball to their right side. Madueke managed to outmaneuver Ait-Nouri once again and easily scored his third goal of the game past Sa.

Wolves briefly looked good, with Lemina scoring a nice goal that went past Sanchez. But the goal was disallowed because Toti was offside in the build-up. Chelsea then scored their eighth goal of the season when Pedro Neto ran down the left and passed to Felix, who shot into the top corner.

The forgettable afternoon took a turn for the worse when a misplaced Chelsea pass allowed Strand Larsen an opportunity, but he missed the target while unmarked in the opposing team's penalty area. Wolves were convincingly defeated at Molineux.
