CHICAGO – In a season where there have been so many unpredictable obstacles, one thing has remained the same: DePaul softball has risen to the occasion. The Blue Demons have seen their fair share of challenges including two 14-day layoffs, but have persevered and shown tremendous grit as winners of nine in a row and 19 of their last 21 contests.   Led by a group with veteran experience paired with youngsters peaking at the right time, the Blue Demons mounted a 25-9 regular season record including a 13-1 league mark to capture the seventh BIG EAST regular season title in program history. DePaul enters next week's BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep as the No. 1 seed and three-time defending champion. The Blue Demons are making their 15th appearance in the conference tournament and have earned a bid in every season the championship has been hosted since joining the league in 2005-2006. "We're excited for the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament. It's going to be a challenge since we have already played each team three times, but we're ready to go and know if we play our softball we'll put ourselves in a good position" said Head Coach Tracie Adix-Zins. DePaul will travel to Storrs, Conn. for the 2021 softball championship hosted at the brand-new Burrill Family Field on the campus of University of Connecticut. The three-day double-elimination event will be held May 13-15. Joining the Blue Demons in the four-team field include No. 2 seed Villanova, third-seeded UConn and the No. 4 seed Butler DePaul is 7-1 against the tournament field in 2021 regular season competition with its lone defeat coming at the hands of two-seeded Villanova. The Blue Demons outscored their opponents 28-13 in the eight matchups. The Blue Demons are no stranger to BIG EAST championship success, winning the title in 2008, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019. UConn has hoisted the trophy on seven occasions, most recently in 2001 while Butler earned its first title in 2016. Villanova is seeking their first BIG EAST crown. In 2019, the Blue Demons took down Providence in the semifinals 4-0 behind a first inning Kate Polcuha three-run home run to set up a championship showdown with Villanova. In the final, DePaul trailed 9-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning at the Ballpark at Rosemont before putting up an eight-run sixth to take the lead for good. Current Blue Demons Jessica Cothern, Natalie Halvorson and Polucha were named to the all-tournament team while Halvorson was named tournament Most Outstanding Player. DePaul will begin its title defense on Thursday, May 13 with a first round contest against Butler set for 11 a.m. CT. Thursday's action can be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi with FS2 carrying the remaining coverage. BIG EAST Softball Championship Presented by JEEP Burrill Family Field at the Connecticut Softball ComplexDAY 1 – THURSDAY, MAY 13: Game 1: No. 1 DePaul vs. No. 4 Butler, Noon – BEDNGame 2: No. 2 Villanova vs. No. 3 UConn, 3 p.m. – BEDNGame 3: Loser of Game 1 vs. Loser of Game 2, 6 p.m. – BEDNDAY 2 – FRIDAY, MAY 14: Game 4: Winners of Game 1 and Game 2, Noon – FS2Game 5: Winner of Game 3 vs. Loser of Game 4, 3 p.m. – FS2Day 3 – SATURDAY, May 15: Game 6: Winners of Game 4 and Game 5, Noon – FS2Game 7 (if necessary): If Winner of Game 5 wins Game 6, 2:30 p.m. – FS2 All times Eastern
