Erling Haaland Becomes Second-Fastest to 20 Champions League Goals for One Club

Champions League

After netting a goal against Sparta Prague in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, Erling Haaland achieved another milestone in his scoring record with Manchester City.

It's another week, and yet again, Erling Haaland has reached a new milestone in scoring.

After recently scoring his 100th goal for Manchester City, the prolific Norwegian striker has hit another milestone in the UEFA Champions League.

During City's third match of the league phase, Haaland scored his first of two goals against the Czech team Sparta Prague, bringing his total to 20 goals in the competition for the Premier League club.

However, this time, he's been unable to break the record for reaching that milestone. Haaland needed 23 matches to net 20 Champions League goals for Manchester City, which is two games longer than it took Ruud van Nistelrooy to hit the same goal tally for Manchester United, who achieved it in 21 matches.

Haaland achieved 20 goals in the UEFA Champions League for Pep Guardiola's team quicker than notable players such as Harry Kane with Tottenham, Cristiano Ronaldo with Real Madrid, Robert Lewandowski with Bayern Munich, and Kylian Mbappé with Paris Saint-Germain.

Quickest To 20 Champions League Goals For A Club

Here’s a rephrased version of the blog section: Ruud van Nistelrooy from Manchester United played 21 matches, while Erling Haaland of Manchester City participated in 23. Harry Kane, representing Tottenham, appeared in 24 games. Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain took part in 25 matches, and Alessandro Del Piero, who played for Juventus, also featured in 26 games. Cristiano Ronaldo, during his time at Real Madrid, had 26 appearances as well. Mario Gomez from Bayern Munich played in 28 matches, while Robert Lewandowski, also from Bayern, made it to 30 games. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who played for Paris Saint-Germain, participated in 32 matches, and Rivaldo of Barcelona took part in 33 games. Lastly, both Sergio Agüero from Manchester City and Kylian Mbappé from Paris Saint-Germain ended up with 34 appearances each.

Here's a look at Erling Haaland's Champions League goals for Manchester City. He has scored a total of 21 goals against eight different teams. His top target has been RB Leipzig, where he has scored six times, including five goals in a single match at the Etihad Stadium in March 2023. He has also found the back of the net against Young Boys (four goals), FC Copenhagen (three), Bayern Munich (two), Sevilla (two), Slovan Bratislava (one), Borussia Dortmund (one), and most recently, Sparta Prague (two).

Haaland has consistently excelled in the Champions League. He hit the back of the net eight times in just six matches while playing for Salzburg, and he followed that up with 15 goals in 13 Champions League appearances for Dortmund.

He had a chance to break Van Nistelrooy’s record after netting 18 goals in his first 18 Champions League matches with City. However, Haaland couldn’t score in either match during last season’s quarter-final loss to Real Madrid, nor could he find the back of the net in this season’s first game against Inter.

His two goals on Wednesday at the Etihad Stadium brought his total to 21, and it’s hard to predict how many more he might score!

Scoring 44 times in 42 matches, Haaland is now tied for 14th place on the Champions League's all-time scoring leaderboard at only 24 years old. While he has a significant journey ahead to surpass Cristiano Ronaldo's remarkable tally of 140, it would take a daring individual to wager against him, especially considering the tournament's larger structure.
