GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) — Authorities reported that objects were hurled at law enforcement during chaotic events in Glasgow on Sunday, in the lead-up to the Scottish League Cup final featuring long-time competitors Celtic and Rangers.
Authorities indicated that there were incidents of smashed windows and announced that police would utilize stop-and-search measures to "stop chaos and serious violence."
Clips circulating on social media seemed to capture the sight of flares being ignited in the heart of Glasgow, alongside groups of masked individuals racing through the streets. In one instance, some shoppers were spotted seeking refuge in a shop entrance while others hurried by.
Chief Superintendent Stevie Dolan issued a statement regarding several disturbances that occurred today in Glasgow city center, where individuals were involved in violent and unruly behavior throughout the area. He emphasized that any use of weapons or acts of violence will not be accepted, and law enforcement will respond appropriately to maintain safety.
"It affects other members of the community and most football fans who are looking forward to experiencing the cup final in a safe environment."
Celtic and Rangers, both located in Glasgow, share one of the most intense rivalries in British football.
The Scottish League Cup final took place at Hampden Park, the national stadium. Celtic emerged victorious, winning 5-4 in the penalty shootout after the match had finished 3-3 following extra time.
