GE and Svante Partner to Create Carbon Capture Technology for Power Generation

Carbon capture and storage

GE and Svante are teaming up to create and analyze new methods for capturing carbon from natural gas-powered electricity production using solid sorbent technologies.

GE is dedicated to carbon capture, which includes making an agreement with Svante and investing in new projects to complement their own carbon management research that's happening within the organization.

Svante, situated in Vancouver, BC, Canada, is a top supplier of dependable and powerful carbon capture and removal solutions using solid sorbents.

GE Gas Power and Svante have teamed up to create and test solid sorbent-based carbon capture technology for natural gas power generation. This partnership is a part of a joint development agreement (JDA) that the two companies have established. As a demonstration of their commitment to this collaboration, GE has invested in Svante as part of Svante's fundraising efforts to the value of US $318 million, which took place in December 2022.

In the year 2022, GE shared that it plans to establish GE Vernova as a separate entity in 2024. This new business will focus entirely on driving the shift towards renewable energy sources. GE has long been committed to sustainability and has a strong presence in the energy sector, having created technology that powers almost a third of the world's electricity. To push the energy transition further, GE is working on a range of innovative technologies, such as carbon capture, which is being developed through partnerships with both industrial and technological research organizations. The recent agreement with and investment in Svante is an example of this ongoing collaboration.

Scott Strazik, CEO of GE Vernova, stated that prompt and continual action and investment are needed to address our world's climate crisis. Crucial technologies, like carbon capture, can provide significant emission reductions and play a significant part in the energy transition. Strazik is thrilled to team up with innovation-driven organizations, such as Svante, to promote advancement on carbon capture solutions specifically for the energy industry. Their goal is to supply more sustainable, reasonably priced, and dependable electricity to more people.

"We are happy to have GE onboard as a vital commercial partner and investor in Svante. Together with our other partners and investors in the value chain, we are confident that GE will contribute immensely to our growth as we swiftly increase our operations and manufacturing capacity to seize millions of CO2 from various industrial sites globally," said Claude Letourneau, the CEO and President of Svante, highlighting the significance of GE's over 130 years of experience in energy applications.

Svante's exceptional carbon capture filters are formed by covering firm adsorbents like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) onto slim patches of laminate. These filters are put together to make Svante's nano-engineered filters, which can be used for various purposes such as capturing CO2 in refineries, cement, steel, aluminum, lime, boilers, pulp & paper, and more. The filters are used for point-source post-combustion carbon capture, meaning they extract CO2 from industrial flue gas (which is the source of the release) and prevent it from being released into the atmosphere. Because Svante serves many different industries, Letourneau believes that 85% of the entire carbon capture and removal sector can utilize their technology.

GE Gas Power and Svante have come together to create a Joint Development Agreement that concentrates on the advancement and distribution of brand new solid sorbent technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of natural gas-fired turbines effectively and responsibly. According to Letourneau, this partnership is thrilled about the potential it has to introduce fresh opportunities and provide pollution-free electricity in the future via partnerships across gas-fired power generation facilities.

Svante has a solution for businesses that create a lot of emissions. They have found a way to capture large amounts of CO2 from existing infrastructure and then either store it safely or use it again in a closed loop. Svante can even capture CO2 from the atmosphere in a way that is environmentally friendly. This means that carbon removal and industrial-scale carbon capture is now possible thanks to Svante. They are a highly respected company and have made it onto the 2023 Global Cleantech 100 list. They were also ranked second out of all private companies in the Corporate Knights Future 50 Fastest-Growing Sustainable Companies in Canada. Steven Chu, a Nobel Laureate and former Secretary of Energy, is on Svante's Board of Directors. To learn more about Svante, click here or visit their website at www.svanteinc.com.
