Canelo Alvarez was winning on all three judges’ scorecards at the time of his stoppage triumph over Billy Joe Saunders.

The cards were ultimately not needed as the Brit’s corner ended the bout due to a serious eye injury he suffered in the eighth round.

The fight began positively for Canelo who was the more active of the pair early on.

He confused Saunders with feints before hammering home telling body shots.

However, the Brit then seized momentum and appeared to be starting to win rounds himself.

His output increased and he was having more and more success up until the eighth and final round.

In this session, Saunders staggered back after being caught with a big counter right uppercut, which caused the damage, and he just survived the round before his corner ended the fight.

Up until the stoppage it seemed to many observers as though the fight was nip-and-tuck.

However, the three judges in Dallas did not see it this way.

Glen Feldman and Max DeLuca had it scored 78-74 for Canelo, while Tim Cheatham had it 77-75.

The stoppage made them irrelevant though, and Canelo was crowned WBA, WBC and WBO super-middleweight king regardless.
