Call of Duty

To honor the arrival of Modern Warfare 3, we have assembled an all-inclusive record of each Call of Duty game, arranged by both the dates of their releases and their sequence in time.

After the lists, there's a full timeline of all the Call of Duty games. This timeline shows the games in order and gives a short summary of each game. Many of these games can be played on Xbox and together they offer a massive 29,385G in achievements. If you play different versions of the cross-generation titles, there are even more achievements to unlock.

Playing Call Of Duty In Chronological Order: A Guide

"WWII Call Of Duty: 1940-1945"

Even though the game mainly concentrates on the end of the war, there are a few parts that occur in 1940. This implies that it's the earliest time period that a Call of Duty game has ever explored (unless they decide to make Call of Duty: Napoleonic Warfare, but they're probably too scared to try).

Vanguard: WWII Era Call Of Duty

The narrative takes place in 1945 and follows the Vanguard's mission to halt "Project Phoenix," a Nazi scheme to prolong the war even after Hitler's demise. However, the story also includes flashbacks to other parts of the war. These flashbacks center on different members of the team and aren't portrayed in a sequential order. The first flashback dates back to August 1941 and features Private Lucas Riggs. Riggs was an Australian soldier who served in the North African campaign.

"Call Of Duty 2: World War II"

Most of the game takes place between 1942 and 1945, but the first mission in the Soviet campaign starts in December 1941. It follows Vasili Koslov, the Soviet main character, as he goes through training to enlist in the Red Army.

"Call Of Duty: Battles From 1942 To 1945"

The game is based on World War 2 and starts with Private Martin, the main character in the American campaign, finishing his basic training on August 10th, 1942. The rest of the game takes place in the years 1944-1945, with most of the gameplay focused on Allied forces pushing the Nazis back.

Interesting tidbit: Many of the developers who worked on the first Call of Duty game were previously part of the team that created the Medal of Honor series. During its development, Call of Duty was given the code name "Medal of Honor Killer." It's safe to say that the game exceeded that objective.

"Call Of Duty: World At War In 1942-45"

After that, the story switches back to a more recognizable setting. This time, we see things from the perspective of Russian Private Dimitri Petrenko during the Battle of Stalingrad. However, the focus on the US side of the war remains in the Pacific, without getting caught up in the popular film portrayal of D-Day. Instead, the attention is on the Battle of Okinawa.

Call Of Duty: WWII Battles

Similar to the initial version, Call of Duty: Finest Hour is separated into three different storylines following the Soviets, British, and Americans correspondingly. The first objective begins in September 1942, while the Battle of Stalingrad was in full effect. As the story continues, players will encounter more battles in regions such as Africa and Europe, before finally experiencing the Allied triumph in crossing the Rhine.

"Call Of Duty 2: WWII Battles"

Although the name may appear strange, the game is titled after the renowned "Big Red One" of the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division. This name was given due to the emblem on their patch. The game delves into their involvement in the North African campaign, commencing in November 1942, continuing to their conquest of Sicily in 1943, and eventually leading up to their participation in the D-Day landings on Omaha beach. Their progression into Germany marks the pinnacle of the game.

"Call Of Duty 3: The Year Is 1944"

It's great to notice that the war's less-known aspects are being highlighted with significant screen time given to the French Resistance, Canadians, and Polish armed forces.

"Black Ops: 1961-1968 In Call Of Duty"

The overall atmosphere of this story sets it apart from the usual COD games; it leans towards a spy-thriller theme unlike the typical war games. At the beginning of the game, we see Mason being questioned by unknown individuals in 1968. The majority of the game revolves around looking back at Mason's previous missions through flashbacks, with the first mission transporting us to 1961.

"Black Ops Cold War: A 1981 Call Of Duty"

The game Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is unique among other COD games because it has multiple endings for its campaign that depend on player decision-making during missions. Players can either thwart the Soviet scheme or ensure its success. Additionally, there are gameplay advantages that players can choose to make the game like a small-scale role-playing adventure.

"Time Travel In Call Of Duty: Black Ops II"

In today's version of the game, we join David Mason, the son of the previous Black Ops lead named Alex Mason. David is part of a US Special Operations team whose mission is to capture a terrorist named Raul Menendez. Meanwhile, in flashback missions, we see Alex Mason trying to find the same Menendez in the 1980s.

"Modern Warfare: The Legacy Of Call Of Duty 4 "

Most of the game happens in a made-up Middle Eastern country during 2011, where some bad guys are trying to take over. There's also a fight going on in Russia and some nuclear weapons were stolen, which makes things even worse. You play as two different soldiers, Paul Jackson who is American and "Soap" MacTavish who is British. They have different points of view of what's happening.

The Call of Duty games really enjoy using flashbacks and in one of their most memorable missions, "All Ghillied Up," they jump back to 1996. This mission is definitely one of the best in the entire franchise and it could be argued that it played a big role in the series' success today.

"20 Years Of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare"

In this story, we get to know a CIA agent named Alex who is on a mission to put a stop to the terrorist group known as Al-Qatala. They have managed to steal chemical weapons and choose to unleash them on London, which ultimately pulls the SAS into the mix. Consequently, we embark on an adventure that takes us to the fictitious land of Urzikstan, where we partner with a group of rebels to take on the notorious Russians, who seem to always be up to no good.

"Call Of Duty's Ghosts: The Next 12 Years"

Let's fast forward a decade to 2027. The conflict between the US and the Federation has come to a stalemate. As a member of the Ghosts, a US Special Operations team, your objective is to prevent the Federation from executing their latest scheme and salvage whatever is left of your homeland.

Modern Warfare 2 : The Ultimate Call Of Duty

Aside from the hassle caused by Infinity Ward's war against my filing system, Modern Warfare 2 is set five years after the original game and revolves around the experiences of Soap MacTavish, who has now been promoted to the rank of captain in the SAS. He is on a mission to locate Vladimir Makarov, the leader of Russia's terrorist group. However, things get increasingly dangerous when Russia invades the United States on a massive scale. The story takes several twists and turns, which involve betrayals, treachery and lots of explosives.

In the year 2020, newly improved adaptations of the game were made available on three different platforms: Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Modern Warfare 3: The 2016-2017 Release

Russia has increased its aggression by invading Europe. Instead of worrying about how they managed to amass the necessary resources and personnel to conquer a large part of the world, you can simply revel in the excessive violence. Eventually, Makarov is punished for his actions in a rather grim manner.

"Modern Warfare II : The Call Of Duty"

Soap and his crew are on a mission to put an end to an Iranian terrorist known as Major Hassan Zyani. Along the way, they embark on an exciting journey that takes them all over the world. They explore real-life destinations such as Amsterdam and Chicago, as well as a simulated Mexican city and two imaginary Middle Eastern nations: Urzikstan, which is back in the game, and the novel United Republic of Adal.

"Modern Warfare III - The Returning Call"

The members of Task Force 141, including Price, are searching for Vladimir Makarov, who has been leading terrorist activities around the world from his cell in the Gulag. Makarov was arrested during the events of Modern Warfare in 2019. However, a private military company in Russia aided his escape from jail. The team now needs to prevent Makarov from carrying out his sinister plans.

"New Release: Black Ops 4 For Call Of Duty Fans"

Specialist HQ features tutorial missions set in the year 2043, while Blackout's multiplayer slaughter takes place vaguely sometime in the 2040s and beyond.

Call Of Duty: Future Warfare

The main character in the game is Private Jack Mitchell, who serves as a member of the US Marines in the futuristic year of 2054. During his first mission, things don't go according to plan and he experiences two major losses: the loss of his best friend and the loss of his arm. Due to this, he is discharged from the military. However, an organization known as Atlas reaches out to him and offers him a new chance at a career by equipping him with a cool new robot arm. Mitchell jumps at the chance to join the organization and begins working for them. As the game progresses over a period of five years, we witness Mitchell uncovering the hidden agenda behind Atlas and their shady objectives despite their charismatic facade.

"Black Ops III: The Future Of Call Of Duty"

In this part of the story, we follow an anonymous main character who faces a rough start by losing their arms to a Grunt combat robot during the first mission. But, no need to worry as the storyline is set in the future and we get to replace our arms with some pretty cool robotic ones. The plot then jumps to the year 2070, where we become a part of the intense conflict between two dominant forces, the Winslow Accord and the Common Defense Pact, known as the Third Cold War.

"Infinite Warfare: Join The Call Of Duty"

Different from many other COD games, Infinite Warfare offers extra missions that you can choose to play in addition to the main story missions. Your central base is the UNSA Retribution, a carrier for space battles that you return to between missions. The game features some exciting scenes, such as space battles, zero gravity situations, and ship takeovers, that make use of its unique setting. In my opinion, it's one of the best games in the COD series, and it doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
