Bruce Willis ‘Not Totally Verbal’ Amid Dementia Battle, Says ‘Moonlighting’ Creator

Last March, Bruce Willis' family stated that he would quit acting due to his aphasia diagnosis. Almost a year later, he received a more detailed diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Since then, his family has been updating his life, such as his 68th birthday celebration earlier this year with his ex-wife Demi Moore and their three children, Scout, Rumer, and Tallulah, his current wife Emma Heming Willis, and their two kids, Mabel and Evelyn.

Moonlighting, a popular TV series from the late 1980s, is now available to stream on Hulu. The show features a dynamic duo played by Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd, who redefined the popular trope of "will they or won't they" couples on television. According to the show's creator, Glenn Gordon Caron, Willis was excited for the show to reach a new audience through streaming. However, getting the show on Hulu took some time, and Caron was able to speak with Willis before his current advanced disease left him unable to communicate. Caron explained that showcasing the show once again on streaming means a great deal to Willis.

Caron mentioned that he has maintained communication with Willis's wife and three grown-up children. This happened when his co-workers on the movie sets grew anxious about his well-being right before his diagnosis. Caron shared that he has made a conscious effort to keep himself involved in Willis's life. He also added that it's hard to fathom that Willis is struggling with the disease since anyone who has spent time with him can attest to his zest for life. Willis truly loved living life to the fullest, and he took pleasure in waking up each morning. Ironically, this is the same disease that's now causing his health to deteriorate.

According to Caron, Willis is now experiencing difficulty communicating due to his FTD condition. Caron explains that Willis seems to view the world as if looking through a screen door, but he is still able to identify Caron for the first few minutes of their interactions. Although Willis was previously an avid reader, he has lost his language skills and is no longer able to read. Despite these changes, he is still recognizable as Bruce. However, Caron notes that Willis no longer displays his previous enthusiasm for life.

In a recent interview with Today, Heming Willis opened up about her husband Bruce Willis's battle with Frontotemporal Dementia, a degenerative brain disease. Heming acknowledged that the condition has been tough on the family but emphasized the importance of finding joy in life's beautiful moments. She shared that Bruce would want nothing more than for them to focus on the positives and live in the happiness of the present.
