British Gymnastics has been accused of “catastrophic failures” over its handling of alleged sexual abuse by a former trampoline coach in what the victim claims is the biggest case of its kind in the governing body’s history.

According to a BBC report, the allegations concern Brian Phelps, who was jailed in 2008, aged 64, after admitting a string of indecent assaults against three children and served six years of a nine-year sentence. He won a bronze medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics as a diver but then became a trampolining coach at a gymnastics club.

The BBC says there were at least 12 other victims, including one, given the pseudonym “Emma” in the report, who claims that in the mid-1970s, from the age of five,
