Boy Swallows Universe review: Wit is necessary in this bleak coming-of-age tale
Eli has managed to maintain a positive outlook on life, despite his difficult circumstances and upbringing. His mother, Frankie (played by Phoebe Tonkin), has struggled with drug addiction, and his stepfather, Lyle (played by Travis Fimmel), is the one who supplies her with heroin. Eli's brother, Gus (played by Lee Tiger Halley), has been nonverbal for quite some time, and his father (played by Simon Baker) is an absent figure who often displays anger.
The TV series is inspired by a bestselling book written by Trent Dalton that is somewhat based on his life. It's not necessarily the most depressing story out there, but it's difficult not to empathize with Eli once the show begins taking place in the 80s. Cameron's acting as Eli is exceptional, portraying the character as someone who is talkative, foul-mouthed, and humorous.

Despite all the events happening in this series, Boy Swallows Universe doesn't dwell on the concept of good and evil. Instead, we are introduced to Slim Halliday (played by Bryan Brown) as the boy's caretaker who has a chronic cough. To the people of Brisbane, Slim is a notorious murderer, but we get to know him as more than just that. Similarly, Lyle (played by Travis Fimmel) makes a string of poor choices but we learn that he is only doing so to support his family.
These are just a few well-known names that viewers from all over the world might be familiar with, not just Australians. In this series, Simon Baker plays the role of Eli's father, who is a complicated alcoholic. It's a completely different character than what viewers might know him for in his previous slick role in The Mentalist. Sophie Wilde, who appeared in Talk To Me, portrays a local journalist who is investigating criminal activities in Brisbane. Additionally, Anthony LaPaglia takes on the role of Tytus Broz, Lyle's employer who owns a factory that produces prosthetics.
Troy Lum, who is responsible for producing the series, characterizes it as a form of happy expression during difficult times. Despite scenes that may bring about feelings of sadness such as coping with loss, being bullied for ketchup, or dealing with addiction, the overall mood of the series maintains a sense of positivity.
Although you may still be invested in Eli and Gus's story, there's no certainty that their situation will improve. As a result, you might feel like you're enduring long and difficult episodes that don't quite hit the mark. The pacing can be uneven, causing the show to feel slow without intending to. The writing is compelling, but it may not always keep you fully engaged.
The drama is full of emotions and is intended to make the viewers cry with its inspirational moments, however, those who are more skeptical will just find them enjoyable instead of being impressed. The series has lines like "just believe" scattered throughout it.
