Isle of Wight Boxing Day Swims: A festive tradition to blow away the cobwebs

Boxing Day

Most recent update: December 24, 2024

Boxing Day swims are a wonderful tradition on the Isle of Wight, as well as in various other places around the globe. If you're thinking about joining in this year, there are at least four different events to consider.

Many people choose to dive in wearing stylish outfits or complete wetsuits, while some of the more daring individuals simply wear their swimsuits. We've even come across a handful of mankinis throughout the years.

Residents of Ryde enjoy kicking things off early and are inviting participants to gather at 8:45 AM on Boxing Day by the Lifeguard Hut at Ryde Beach, all set for the whistle to blow at 9:00 AM.

Those enjoying the water and onlookers are advised to wear warm clothing.

In Gurnard, activities kick off a bit later, with the invigorating swim beginning at 11 AM.

We will be collecting donations for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Every contribution plays a vital role in creating hopeful opportunities for young individuals who are navigating the challenges of cancer and its aftermath.

The dip is located across from The Woodvale and next to Gurnard Sailing Club.

Ventnor typically draws large crowds, with thousands of spectators and hundreds of participants actively involved.

The event is being put together by the Ventnor Carnival Association, and their volunteers will be collecting donations to support both the association and the local cancer charity, P.A.T.C.H.

At noon, the whistle sounds, inviting spectators to linger in town and enjoy the local cafes and pubs that are operating.

In Shanklin, at Small Hope Beach, swimmers will take to the water at 12:30 PM. But before that, you can enjoy plenty of activities at the Salix Cafe.

They guarantee music from the Silver Machine Roadshow starting at 11am.

A fundraising effort will be held for the Sandown and Shanklin Independent Lifeboat.
