Stay safe this Bonfire Night

Bonfire Night

Council Leader Cammy Day encourages residents to participate only in officially organized events this Bonfire Night and reiterates his request for a total prohibition on the sale of fireworks to the public.

The leader of the council, Cammy Day, stated that:

Bonfire Night is a wonderful occasion for friends and families to gather and watch amazing fireworks in their neighborhoods. I encourage you to participate only in official events tonight, and to look out for one another while following safety guidelines.

I've already shared my frustration and outrage regarding the chaos and violence caused by a small group of senseless individuals on Halloween. I really hope we don’t witness anything similar tonight.

I can’t understand why anyone would want to create such fear and anxiety in our neighborhoods. I worry that it’s just a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured or even worse.

That's why I'm reiterating my appeal today for a total prohibition on the public sale of fireworks, along with stricter penalties for those who seek to instill fear and disrupt our neighborhoods.

After last week's incidents, I went to the Lothian bus depot and control room. The drivers I talked to were understandably upset and worried about their safety. It's unacceptable for anyone to experience violence at their workplace, and they have our complete backing, just like our colleagues in the Police and Fire Service.

I want to reassure everyone that we are actively coordinating with Police Scotland, who have dedicated extra resources, as well as other partners, to ensure that tonight goes smoothly and peacefully.

If you see any crimes happening or have any useful information, please reach out to the police or Crimestoppers as soon as possible.

From November 1 to 10, there are designated Firework Control Zones in four neighborhoods: Niddrie, Calton Hill, Seafield, and Balerno. During this period, it is illegal to use fireworks—except for sparklers and indoor fireworks—unless they are part of an authorized display.

Various organized activities are happening throughout the city. You can find all the information on the council's website.

Released: November 5, 2024
