MP warns of consequences after Birmingham disorder

Birmingham

A well-known Birmingham politician has teamed up with law enforcement to caution that individuals who caused chaos in the city on Monday night will be held accountable.

Authorities have stated that they are looking into different incidents of disturbance following a gathering to protest against a rumoured far-right march that did not happen.

Jess Phillips, a Member of Parliament (MP) for Birmingham Yardley, spoke out against the violence that occurred in her constituency. She made it clear that any acts of violence would not be accepted and expressed her gratitude towards residents who contacted the police during the chaos.

The Clumsy Swan pub in Yardley was thankful for the help from the community after its windows were broken. The Sheldon Mosque even offered to cover the cost of fixing the damage.

The police reported that a significant crowd assembled in the Bordesley Green area on Monday following rumors of a far-right demonstration that did not occur. They also confirmed that there were no confrontations between individuals from different groups.

Based on posts on social media, the group of people, mostly young Asian men, was reportedly close to 300 in size.

The police in the West Midlands mentioned that there were occasional criminal incidents, including reports of an assault and a man carrying a dangerous weapon. Officers are currently looking into these incidents.

In addition to the vandalism of cars in Bordesley Green and Stechford, authorities reported an assault on The Clumsy Swan pub located on Stoney Lane in Yardley.

Incorrect information had spread that a extremist group was present in the building.

But according to posts on social media, the older members of the community helped to calm the situation.

On X, Ms Phillips mentioned that the residents had shown "elegance and generosity".

The bar was able to close for the night as usual after receiving a visit from many supportive members of the community.

She mentioned that folks in Yardley were frightened on Monday night.

"The authorities have visited all locations where violent acts have occurred, and everyone responsible will be held accountable, regardless of their identity," she stated.

Chief Superintendent Richard North expressed relief that the anticipated protests in the city did not actually happen. However, there were isolated incidents of criminal behavior during the evening that the police are actively working to address and bring those responsible to justice.

We want to make sure that anyone who is involved in any criminal activity on our streets will face strong consequences.
