Bayern Munich vs Union Berlin: Assistmeister Muller subbed off

It wasn’t an easy game but it was definitely a simple one as Bayern Munich didn’t need anything special to beat this Union Berlin team. A fine cross from Kingsley Coman and two moments of Thomas Muller magic were all it took. Despite the snow slowing them down and a dogged resistance from Urs Fischer’s men, Bayern Munich showed their quality by dominating the game from start to finish. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka had another excellent outing in midfield together. Kimmich really shines as a proper #6 playing in front of a back four. If only Alphonso Davies could finish ... imagine the potential. Union Berlin injured maybe half their team during this game. It might become a turning point for their season.

74’ — Josip Stanisic comes off after bleeding profusely. He took an elbow to the face.

65’ — Subs: Sadio Mane and Serge Gnabry come on for Choupo-Moting and Kingsley Coman.

55’ — It’s snowing pretty hard in Munich again.

45’ — Second half kicks off! No more snow on the pitch.

Halftime: Bayern Munich lead 3-0.

45’ + 1’ — GOOOOOOOAL! Jamal Musiala makes it 3-0! Another Muller assist!

40’ — GOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Kingsley Coman makes it 2-0! Muller assist!

30’ — GOOOOOOAL! Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting makes it 1-0!

20’ — No goals so far. Bayern have the majority of the chances, but the snowy pitch makes it hard to pass and dribble.

Kickoff: We’re underway! It’s snowing really hard out there.

One hour until kickoff: We have lineups! While Thomas Muller does start, Julian Nagelsmann throws us a curve ball by benching both Leroy Sane and Joao Cancelo. Bayern Munich starts in what looks like a back four with Stanisic, Pavard, De Ligt, and Alphonso Davies at the back. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka are in midfield, while it looks like Jamal Musiala and Kingsley Coman are on the wings.

After losing to Gladbach last week, Bayern Munich have no more room for slip ups. Dortmund have already leapfrogged the Bavarians to the top of the table, and Union Berlin also threaten to so the same if they win the game tonight. Unfortunately for Nagelsmann, he will have to play this game without his best defender, as Dayot Upamecano serves a suspension for his red card last weekend.

The good news is that Sadio Mane is back and will be an option from the bench. The same goes for Kingsley Coman, who has mostly recovered from his calf problem. Meanwhile Thomas Muller will definitely start the game after the coach came under heavy criticism all throughout the week for subbing him off early vs Gladbach. Will this be enough to make the difference? Will Berlin’s exertions in midweek prevent them from playing at their full potential at the Allianz Arena? We can’t wait to find out.
