Barry McGuigan

Viewers of Good Morning Britain claimed that hosts Kate Garraway and Rob Rinder were 'trapping' I'm A Celebrity contestant Barry McGuigan by posing 'unreasonable' questions during Friday's episode.

The 63-year-old ex-boxer appeared quite moved as he talked about his deceased daughter, Danika, during his initial interview following his exit from the jungle on Thursday.

Host Rob, 46, spoke with Barry, who joined the conversation straight from Australia's Gold Coast. Rob expressed, "My mom is a big admirer of yours, and it's all because of your kindness."

The speaker went on to commend Barry for his bravery in discussing difficult subjects, noting, "Many people were deeply moved by how you shared your experience with grief." He then posed the question, "Why is it important for us to have these conversations?"

The Irish star appeared to be deeply moved as he struggled to respond to the questions, holding back tears.

"It's the worst thing that has ever happened to me," he confessed.

Viewers of Good Morning Britain claimed that hosts Kate Garraway and Rob Rinder tried to 'entrap' I'm A Celeb contestant Barry McGuigan, 63, by asking him 'unjust' questions during Friday's episode.

The ex-boxer appeared to be clearly emotional as he spoke about his deceased daughter, Danika, during his first interview after being voted out of the jungle on Thursday.

"Five years ago, I lost my daughter, and it was a terrible experience. My wife and I have never truly healed from it. However, I've found that I do feel a bit better as time passes," the beloved television personality shared.

Audience members watching the daytime program commented that Barry seemed 'uneasy' while answering a series of personal questions, even though he tried hard to stay calm.

Numerous supporters came together on X to back Barry, lauding his 'bravery' and 'genuineness.' At the same time, they criticized the 'insensitive' inquiries posed by the two hosts, commenting:

"A shameful question directed at Barry McGuigan from you; it's quite unacceptable."

"@GMB, it's really disappointing to see you bring up Barry McGuigan's daughter again during a live broadcast. Are you trying to boost your ratings by repeatedly bringing attention to his personal tragedy? What’s the reasoning behind this?"

"Why did GMB question Barry McGuigan about his daughter, Kate, and Rob during a live broadcast this morning? It forced him to revisit the painful memories surrounding his daughter's passing, resulting in an uncomfortable experience for viewers."

"Wow, I can't believe @GMB made Barry McGuigan tear up!"

"Come on, everyone. It's not right to take advantage of his loss. Why are you bringing Barry's pain onto live television? It's really disappointing."

"Losing my daughter five years ago was incredibly painful. It’s something that my wife and I still struggle with. However, I am finding that with time, I’m starting to heal a little," he said, trying to express his feelings.

Many supporters came together on X to back Barry, commending his bravery and genuineness, while swiftly criticizing the insensitive questions from the two hosts.

This morning, I really felt for Barry. It just seemed so unjust that he was put in a position where he had to discuss his daughter.

"Who, on this planet, is advising Barry McGuigan to 'move on'? People can be so cruel! #gmb"

This morning, I really felt for Barry. It seemed so unjust that he was forced to speak about his daughter in that moment.

I doubt Kate would have been happy if Barry had flipped the situation and confronted her about her deceased husband or the financial issues facing her media company on live television. I have nothing against Kate—I actually like her—but I believe she crossed the line a little this morning.

I'm really feeling for Barry—what a wonderful person he is. It's incredibly courageous of him to continue sharing his thoughts and feelings despite his sorrow.

"Seeing your journey has really touched me, Barry. I lost my little boy, and it's an experience that is incredibly painful. No one should ever be advised to simply move on from such a loss, yet, as you mentioned, some people do. You were fantastic during your time in the jungle, and you're an amazing person."

The boxing promoter may have permanently left the jungle, but he undoubtedly captured the nation’s affection by courageously sharing his experience of losing his daughter Danika in 2019. She had fought against cancer for five years before passing away at the age of 33.

While participating in I'm A Celeb, Barry tragically shared that his daughter Danika never had the chance to experience the acting opportunity that might have launched her career.

Fans of I'm A Celeb commended the boxer for addressing Danika's death in 2019, which occurred five years after she succumbed to cancer.

Danika's last appearance on screen featured her in a prominent role in Wildfire (shown on the left), just weeks before she sadly succumbed to cancer.

After Danika's passing, the film Wildfire made its Irish debut at Barry McGuigan Park in Clones, a town in Co Monaghan. The athlete referred to this premiere as "a suitable tribute" to his daughter.

The actress featured in the thriller Wildfire, but unfortunately passed away a year before it was released at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2020.

Barry mentioned that the film was well-received by critics after it came out, and that Danika had put in a lot of effort to achieve her success before she passed away.

Wildfire tells the story of two sisters who come back together and uncover hidden truths about their mother's history. Danika portrays one of the sisters, while Nora-Jane Noone stars alongside her.

The movie received the IWC Schaffhausen Filmmaker Bursary Award during the London BFI Film Festival, while Nika was awarded the Lead Actress in a Film posthumously at the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) Film and Drama Awards.

After Danika's passing, Wildfire premiered in Ireland at Barry McGuigan Park located in Clones, County Monaghan. The athlete remarked that the event served as "a meaningful tribute" to his daughter.

He expressed that their hearts are heavy because Nika isn't here to witness the success of her final performance. However, he and his family find solace in sharing this moment with friends, relatives, and the community in Clones as they watch it together on the big screen.

This is a wonderful way to honor her remarkable legacy and incredible skills. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Wildcard Distribution, the amazing volunteers at the Clones Film Festival, and everyone at Monaghan County Council for their support.

Danika McGuigan sadly lost her fight against cancer in 2019 at the age of 33, surrounded by her heartbroken family.

Danika's family shared the news of her passing after her courageous fight against cancer in a statement on July 24, 2019 (as seen in the photo from 2011).

On the fifth anniversary of her passing, the boxing champion took to social media to express, "It's been five years today, Nika. We miss you dearly."

From a young age, she faced health challenges, having been diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 11.

In an interview with Belfast Live in 2021, Barry shared that he will 'never fully heal' from the loss of his child, but he is determined to do his best to 'continue with life'.

He expressed, "I lost my daughter two years back, and it has been overwhelming. I don't think I'll ever get over it."

"My life will continue, but I know I won't be the same person, as family holds the utmost importance in my heart."

On the fifth anniversary of her passing, the boxing champion posted on social media: "It's been five years today, Nika. We miss you dearly."

Danika appeared in movies such as Philomena, Mammal, and Wildlife, and she was professionally recognized as Nika McGuigan.

She went to Benenden, the former school of Princess Anne, located in Kent, and later earned a degree in drama in Dublin.

A family announcement following her passing expressed: "With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, we regret to inform you of the loss of our beloved daughter and sister, Danika 'Nika' McGuigan."

Viewers referred to the 'heartfelt' moment as the 'most touching in I'm A Celeb history', as all the contestants were overcome with emotion and cried while rallying around Barry.

Following a short yet courageous fight with cancer, Nika peacefully departed this life in the early morning of Tuesday, July 23, with her beloved family by her side.

"As a family, we are heartbroken and kindly request privacy during this tough time so we can mourn for our dear Nika."

Danika was Barry's sole daughter, and she was raised with her three brothers, Shane, Jake, and Blane, all of whom he had with his wife, Sandra McGuigan.

Shane has taken after his father, establishing himself as one of the most accomplished trainers in boxing.

Reflecting on his daughter's leukemia diagnosis in 1997, he shared with The Sunday Times in 2005: "Learning that Danika had cancer felt like a heavy blow."

There's really nothing more difficult than seeing your child unwell. Even all my experiences in the ring couldn't have equipped me for this.

After approximately eighteen months away from school, Danika re-entered everyday life. During a deeply emotional talk with her father, she expressed her determination to not experience illness again.

He went on to say, "She discovered her passion for drama and is currently studying acting in Dublin. The term 'dynamo' doesn't fully capture her energy and talent."

With Danika, the glass isn't just half-empty or half-full—it's overflowing. In reality, it's likely to be brimming and spilling over.

Fans of I'm A Celeb were quite disappointed on Thursday night as they said goodbye to Irish personalities Barry and Maura Higgins following an unexpected double elimination.

The popular ITV program is broadcast in the Republic of Ireland, a practice that has been in place since the show's launch in 2004. However, viewers in Ireland are unable to cast their votes.

Certain fans turned to X to voice their frustration over the voting outcome, arguing that both Maura and Barry would have been safe if their supporters in Ireland had been allowed to cast their votes.

Irish fans of I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here! expressed their frustration over not being able to vote in the competition, especially after the elimination of Irish contestants Maura Higgins and Barry on Thursday.

They said, "It's really funny that viewers in Ireland aren't allowed to vote." ... "This situation wouldn't be occurring if people in Ireland could participate in the voting."

Why can't people in Ireland vote on I'm A Celebrity? It's 2024, and there are Irish contestants in the show, so we should be able to cast our votes!

"This wouldn't be an issue if Ireland were allowed to vote... It's really frustrating that only two Irish citizens are left, and it's so unjust that Ireland doesn't have a say."

"Two famous people from Ireland find themselves in the jungle, but surprisingly, no one back home can cast a vote. Naturally, both Irish contestants end up being eliminated!"

"Request for Ireland to be granted the right to vote, as this situation is absurd."
