Chattogram: Bangladesh 246, England 196 - Bangladesh won by 50 runs

Shakib Al Hasan delivered a fine all-round performance as Bangladesh beat England by 50 runs to deny the tourists a series whitewash in Chattogram.

The allrounder was one of three players, alongside Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mushfiqur Rahim, to score a half-century in the first innings as Bangladesh fought back from losing two early wickets to reach 246. He then picked up 4 for 35 to become the first Bangladesh bowler to take 300 ODI wickets.

The hosts elected to bat after winning the toss but quickly found themselves in trouble against the bowling of Sam Curran. Litton Das, who has scored just seven runs across the series, was caught behind by Jos Buttler after facing just three deliveries while captain Tamim Iqbal was undone by Curran's swing, picking out James Vince at point.

Shanto and Mushfiqur were tasked with rebuilding Bangladesh's innings and opted for sensible defence against England's pacers. Boundaries became noticeably more frequent following the introduction of spin in the 16th over.

Shortly before the halfway point of the innings, Shanto brought up his second ODI half-century off 69 balls but his joy was short-lived, with a costly miscommunication with Mushfiqur resulting in a run out at the non-striker's end. An unimpressed Shanto departed for 53 (71).

Mushfiqur made amends for his error, bringing up a half-century of his own and sharing a brisk 38-run stand with Shakib. However, just as he was looking to put the hammer down, he was dismissed for 70 (93) by Adil Rashid.

Mahmudullah fell cheaply to Rashid a couple of overs later as a middle-order collapse loomed, but Shakib had other ideas, scoring a 55-ball fifty to help Bangladesh beyond 200.

However, the final five wickets fell for just 34 balls as Bangladesh's innings ended on a negative note. Chris Woakes accounted for Afif Hossain, Rehan Ahmed dismissed Mehidy Hasan caught and bowled to collect his maiden ODI wicket, and Jofra Archer struck three times – including taking the key wicket of Shakib (75 off 71) thanks to a flying boundary catch by Jason Roy – to wrap up the innings in the penultimate over.

In reply, England raced out of the blocks, with Phil Salt and Roy putting on a run-a-ball 54 for the first wicket. Salt was the aggressor in the partnership, dispatching seven early boundaries.

However, three wickets in eight deliveries soon checked England's progress. Mahmudullah took two catches in quick succession to account for Salt and Dawid Malan, the latter departing for a two-ball duck, before Shakib bowled Roy for 19 (33) to pick up his second of the day.

Curran, an experimental No.5, and Vince set about dragging their side back into the match and shared a sedate 49-run partnership off 81 deliveries for the fourth wicket. However, Curran eventually gave in to temptation and picked out Das at long-off after attempting to hoick Mehidy Hasan for a boundary.

Regular wickets continued to blunt England's chase, with Taijul Islam striking twice and Shakib and Ebadot Hossain taking one wicket apiece as Vince, Moeen, Buttler and Rashid came and went departed to leave Woakes with the uphill task of finding 73 runs with only two wickets to play with.

That quickly became one wicket, with Rehan's maiden ODI innings lasting just seven deliveries before he became Shakib's 300th scalp.

Shakib was denied a fifth wicket after Archer survived an lbw call but the following delivery, Mustafizur Rahman dismissed Woakes (34 off 46) caught and bowled to seal the win for his side in the 44th over.
