Waiting 22 Years To Play Glastonbury: Avril Lavigne's Journey

Avril Lavigne's performance of pop-punk songs gathered one of the largest audiences in the history of The Other Stage.

Avril Lavigne is known as the first pop-punk princess and she definitely proved that when she performed in front of a massive audience at Glastonbury on Saturday night.

The emotional songs she wrote as a lovesick teenager still hold strong today, over 20 years later.

She performed some of her most popular songs including Complicated, Sk8er Boi, and My Happy Ending.

"I can't believe I waited 22 years to have the chance to play at Glastonbury, but it was truly amazing," she shares with the BBC.

Avril describes how amazing the crowd was at the event. Everyone was cheering, holding signs, and even setting off colorful smoke bombs. It was an unforgettable experience for her.

The artist from Canada attracted a massive audience to The Other Stage, setting a new record. It was obvious from the beginning of her performance that she had a devoted group of fans.

'After 22 Years, I Can't Believe It!'

Multiple times during her performance, the cameras showed audience members enthusiastically singing along to the songs.

"I've released seven albums and gone on seven tours, and it's still just as thrilling," she explains.

Avril recently put out a collection of her best songs, and tickets for her tour in North America are all sold out.

She expresses her continued love for performing songs from her debut album, Let Go. This album, released in 2002, played a key role in making her the youngest female soloist to achieve a UK number one album at just 17 years old.

Everyone remains enthusiastic about the music - I believe that's what binds me and my fans together, it's the craft of songwriting and the melodies.

The impact she has had on women in the music industry is clear - Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and Charli XCX have all mentioned the 39-year-old as a major source of inspiration.

Avril sang songs from her first album, Let Go, which came out 22 years ago.

Avril explains that her songs connect with people because they are about real life experiences. She believes in being authentic and true to herself when writing lyrics.

I'm sharing my experiences from high school, such as developing feelings for a guy, experiencing love, and understanding its emotions.

She became part of the roster during a historic year for Glastonbury Festival, which had two women headlining for the first time.

Shania Twain also made an appearance in the iconic slot - someone Avril had the chance to perform with after winning a contest back in 1998.

After that performance, she ended up signing a record deal.

"I admired [Shania] when I was young - I even had the opportunity to perform on stage with her when I was 14 years old, so being here tonight holds a special significance for me."

The standout moment from Sunday at Glastonbury was seeing Avril Lavigne join Shania Twain on stage at the Pyramid stage.

Despite describing herself as "just a girl from a small Canadian town," Avril's followers view her differently.
