Feyenoord battles but they leave Atletico Madrid empty-handed - Football Oranje

Atletico Madrid

Feyenoord was in the lead twice, but unfortunately, they were defeated by Atletico Madrid with a score of 3-2. Despite their efforts, it was an unfair outcome for Feyenoord.

Arne Slot couldn't count on Santiago Gimenez once again because of his suspension, so Ayase Ueda started as the striker and Ramiz Zerrouki joined the midfield.

Feyenoord scored the first goal of the match in just seven minutes when Ueda made a run towards the goalpost and kicked the ball, which bounced off Jan Oblak and Mario Hermoso before finding its way into the net.

Five minutes after the initial goal, Alvaro Morata scored the equalizer in a contentious manner. At first, it was disallowed due to being offside, but after a careful review by VAR, it was eventually awarded. Though Morata wasn't offside, it was only possible because Mats Wieffer tackled the ball preventing an offside Atletico attacker from receiving it. Upon review, it was decided that Morata's actions didn't impact the game.

Feyenoord got back their advantage as David Hancko netted the ball at the back post on his second attempt following Calvin Stengs' fantastic free-kick.

The Dutch team managed to defend their position, but just before the end of the first half's extra time, Antoine Griezmann managed to level the score.

At the start of the second half, Nahuel Molina made a great pass that Morata successfully scored to give Atletico a 3-2 advantage.

Following that, Feyenoord worked hard to even the score and Oblak had to rescue Atletico multiple times to stay ahead. Yankuba Minteh, a substitute player, posed a significant threat, but Feyenoord was unable to level the score.

The Rotterdammers fought hard, but unfortunately, they had to return home without any points. Their group standing remains at three points, whereas Atletico is leading with four points.
