Archie Gray: Brentford agree fee for Leeds' 18-year-old midfielder in deal worth potential £40m

Brentford are getting close to finalizing the deal to bring in Leeds midfielder Archie Gray.

They have reached an agreement on a starting fee of £35 million for the 18-year-old, and he has been allowed to undergo a medical examination.

The agreement has the potential to reach a value of £40 million if certain bonus requirements are achieved.

Nevertheless, reports suggest that there are still details to be worked out before his signing with Brentford is complete, and other teams are also showing interest in the player.

Gray has had a very successful season at Elland Road, playing in 52 matches in total across all competitions. Unfortunately, Leeds United lost in the Championship play-off final to Southampton, with Gray playing the entire 90 minutes of the game.

He is the son of ex-footballer Andy Gray who played for Nottingham Forest, Leeds, and Burnley. His first experience with the first-team came just three months before his 16th birthday when he was included in the squad for a Premier League match against Arsenal in December 2021.

What Does Brentford Need This Summer?

Sky Sports numbers expert Paul Harrison:

During the previous season, Brentford had their worst performance in the Premier League, finishing in 16th place with only 39 points. They were only able to win five out of their last 24 league games.

During the initial portion of the season, they were able to see what it would be like without their star player Ivan Toney. This situation may continue next summer as he only has one year remaining on his contract.

"Thomas Frank wasted no time in securing the services of Brazilian forward Igor Thiago, with the deal being officially announced in February. Thiago was one of the top goal scorers in Belgium's premier league this season, second only to Kevin Denkey. Additionally, Thiago's conversion rate was nearly three times higher than the player he is set to replace."
