Last Tango in Halifax and former Coronation Street star Anne Reid has revealed how she broke her arm just days before Christmas, resulting in her having to head to A&E.

On Tuesday’s The One Show, Lauren Laverne and Jermaine Jenas welcomed the celebrated actress into the BBC One studio to talk about her new play Marjorie Prime.

However, her arm being supported by a sling sparked concern by former professional footballer Jermaine, who asked her: ‘Your arm – how is it, how are you doing?’

On December 20 last year, the 87-year-old informed her followers on Twitter: ‘Last Thursday night I spent six hours in A&E at @NHSEnglandLDN #UCLH with a broken arm. The nurses and doctors were absolutely brilliant so kind and caring I can’t thank them enough.’

Having broken her arm just under a fortnight before Christmas, Anne told Lauren and Jermaine that her injury came about while trying to put up a Christmas decoration.

‘I fell off a ladder at Christmas putting up a Christmas decoration,’ she shared, before admitting how difficult certain tasks have been in her everyday life without being able to use both of her hands.

‘I didn’t realise how many times you need both hands. I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to put a bra on with one hand,’ the former Dinnerladies star quipped.

‘Not quite, no,’ an amused Jermaine responded to their guest’s remark.

After adding that she also found it difficult to tie her shoelaces, Anne acknowledged that while she ‘cracked’ her arm, ‘it’s fine’ and ‘getting better’.

‘You’re in recovery, that’s what we like to hear,’ Jermaine stated.

When Anne announced on Twitter that she had broken her limb, she received a rush of support, with Doctor Who star Bonnie Langford writing: ‘Wishing you better soon, Annie xx.’

One fan tweeted: ‘Oh no! Wishing you a speedy recovery and a very happy Christmas, Anne,’ while another commented at the time: ‘That’s sweet of you to give the staff a positive shout out! Best wishes for a swift recovery.’

During her interview on The One Show, Anne also revealed the text she sent her former co-star Sarah Lancashire over her performance in Happy Valley, telling her: ‘You are one of the best actresses on the planet.’

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
