Ex-Manchester United soccer player Angel Gomes is in the hospital getting better after being carried off the field with a serious head injury.

The player, who was a key part of the team when England won the Under-17 World Cup in 2017 and the Under-21 European Championship six years after, suffered a serious injury while competing for his current team Lille in a match against Reims in the French Ligue 1 yesterday.

The match was delayed while 23-year-old Gomes received medical attention on the field for over half an hour following a collision with Reims midfielder Amadou Kone in the 11th minute.

He was carried off on a stretcher while supporters from both teams shouted the former Manchester United player's name.

The match continued with Kone being ejected and 34 extra minutes added to the opening half, leading to Lille's 2-0 victory.

Gomes, who is 23 years old now, played a key role in England's victory at the Under-21 European Championship in 2023. In this photo, he can be seen celebrating with Emile Smith Rowe and Morgan Gibbs-White.

The referee Eric Wattellier quickly asked for medical help after the crash, and Gomes received treatment on the field for 17 minutes before being taken to the hospital.

The players from Lille gathered in a circle around Gomes as he was being treated on the field.

Kone was sent off with a red card for his dangerous tackle, and a photo showed him praying for Gomes from inside the Reims locker room.

During the break, a statement from Lille's club announced that Gomes was awake and aware again.

Angel Gomez is awake now and has been taken to the hospital. Our hearts and prayers are with him during this time.

After the game, the club's president Olivier Letang mentioned that Angel Gomes is performing well. However, they will wait for the results of his additional tests overnight before confirming if everything has turned out positively.

The head coach of Lille, Bruno Genesio, quickly realized the injury was severe and was upset that the medical attention on the field was not delivered promptly.

He said to the journalists: "We were extremely frightened. The most recent updates are somewhat comforting, but it's best to exercise caution."

I felt upset seeing one of our teammates injured. We spend so much time together and have a close bond like a family. Witnessing one of our own being targeted and hurt was really tough to deal with.

Lille's French defender Bafode Diakite was full of joy last night as he scored his team's first goal against Reims. To celebrate, he proudly displayed the jersey of his teammate Angel Gomes, who was unable to play due to injury.

Lille players looked upset as Gomes was treated for his severe head injury.

Gomes, who is 23 years old, got hurt just 11 minutes into the game on Saturday when Lille played against Reims.

Genesio mentioned that some of his players were close to crying during the difficult situation.

Congratulations on completing the task, as it is always challenging, and sending positive thoughts to Angel - we are happy to hear the initial positive update," he remarked.

Angel inquired about his participation in the game next Saturday, which indicates a good sense of humor on his part. Personally, the focus of tonight's event was not on the match for me.

When the game ended, the two teams gathered together holding a Reims jersey with the message 'Take care Angel' written in French.

Gomes, who was born in the northern part of London, started his career at Manchester United by playing in five Premier League games from 2017 to 2020. He then transferred to Lille and went on loan to Boavista, a Portuguese club, for a year.

When he played his first game for United at the age of 16 in May 2017 against Crystal Palace, coming in as a substitute for Wayne Rooney, he became the youngest player for the club since Duncan Edwards in 1953.

Gomes has shared openly about his belief in Christianity, mentioning in a conversation in 2020: 'I'm a believer, I follow the Christian faith, so I always pray before matches and as I step onto the field.'

He played for United from the ages of six to 19, moving up through the club's training program and playing for managers José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

His dad, Gil Gomes, who is 51 years old, competed for Portugal's Under-21 team and also played for teams such as Braga and Salford City.

Gomes can be spotted in this photo competing for Lille against Turkish team Fenerbahce, led by former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko, in a UEFA Champions League match that took place on August 13, 2021.

Angel Gomes joined Lille in 2020 and was then loaned out to Boavista, a club in Portugal, for a year.

In 2022, Gomes remembered a harsh reprimand he received while at Manchester United that almost brought him to tears.

Gomes shared with SPORTbible: 'I've never revealed this before, but there was a time when [Mourinho] brought me to a cup match with the senior team after I had played with the Under-21s.'

We were all sitting down to eat when he came over to talk to everyone. Then he turned to me and said, "I am in trouble because of you."

He told me, "You were doing one thing and then another, but you should have done this instead." This happened in front of the entire team.

I had received scoldings before, but never from the higher-up. It caught me off guard. I was surprised. After he finished yelling, he went back to his tasks.

I couldn't move from my seat. After some time, a few guys approached me and reassured me, saying, "Don't stress, just don't pay any attention to him. He's just trying to provoke a reaction from you - that's just the way he is."
