Andrew Buchan is the star in a new BBC One drama Better as Col McHugh, a drug baron who struck a deal with a corrupt police officer 20 years ago. The drama follows DCI Lou Slack, played by Leila Farzad, who attempts to cut ties with the head of Leeds’ criminal underworld.

The BBC One synopsis for Better reads: "Everyone has their own version of right and wrong. A corrupt copper and a Leeds gangster are bound together by decades of dishonesty. To break the ties, there's only one way out."

The series starts on BBC1 on Monday, February 13 at 9pm and runs for five episodes. Once the first ones airs, the entire series will be available on Iplayer.

Who is Andrew Buchan?

The actor, from Stockport, Cheshire, is best known for his roles in All the Money in the World (2017) starring Michelle Williams and ITV’s Broadchurch. He recently portrayed Matt Hancock as Health Secretary in the Sky drama This England in 2021.

He married Amy Nuttall in September 2012 who is best known as Emmerdale's Chloe Atkinson who she played from 2000 until 2005. The actress also starred in ITV’s Downton Abbey as housemaid Ethel Parks. Together the couple share one child, born in 2015.

Andrew was brought up in Bolton, Lancashire, and attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. He also studied a BA Honours in Modern Languages at Durham University and is fluent in French, German and Spanish.

Speaking about his role in Better on the BBC Breakfast Programme, Andrew said: "It’s about morality and redemption, and two folk who both want out but don’t know how to do it. Very slowly over the course of five episodes these close allies become enemies and you see them unravel in the most horrific way."

Monday’s episode, the first of five, will see DCI Lou come to the realisation that she needs to make a change. The synopsis reads: "After her son almost dies, corrupt detective Lou Slack attempts to make amends for her misdeeds but realises she must betray the dangerous drug baron she has been working for."
