America's Cup: Great Britain cut New Zealand lead to 4-2 in Barcelona
Great Britain narrowed New Zealand's advantage in the America's Cup to 4-2 by securing victories in both races on Wednesday.
Ben Ainslie's Ineos Britannia team found themselves trailing 4-0 on Monday in the best-of-13 competition taking place in Barcelona.
Britain capitalized on a rough beginning for Emirates Team New Zealand in the fifth race, creating a distance of 1.3 kilometers and finishing the race a full minute and 18 seconds ahead.
In the sixth race, they gradually increased their advantage and managed to maintain it, even with a strong effort from the New Zealand team to catch up.
"We're back in the game, and that's a major accomplishment," stated Ainslie, the captain of Britannia.
The team is putting in a great deal of hard work. We have a long journey ahead, but progress is being made. Each day, we’re improving our skills at navigating this vessel.
"We're really pleased with the victory. It was challenging at the beginning, but we prepared for those scenarios. We were able to hold our ground and keep them from advancing, which made things quite difficult for them afterwards."
New Zealand's skipper, Peter Burling, expressed his disappointment, saying, "It's unfortunate that we weren't able to overtake them and ended up losing lift from the foils."
"It's definitely disappointing to be off the foils. We made a minor mistake by being just a bit late, but it was also somewhat unfortunate."
"That's what sports are all about, and I can't wait for the next event!"
Nathan Outteridge from New Zealand commented, "We didn't perform to our best ability today and are disappointed in ourselves. We'll take a look at what went wrong and make sure to return stronger next time."
Races seven and eight will happen on Friday, while race thirteen is set for Monday.
New Zealand has claimed victory in the last two America's Cups, whereas Britain has yet to secure a win in the competition's 173-year history.
