Former Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson has confessed that he occasionally longs for the role, even 11 years after wrapping up his illustrious career.

At 82 years old, Ferguson stepped down from his position at United following the 2012-13 season, where he successfully led the team to regain the Premier League championship from their local rivals, Manchester City. In a recent interview with the BBC, which was broadcast on Friday, he mentioned that there are still moments when he reflects on his former job.

"Sure, I miss it now and then," he shared. "During that first year after I retired, I attended the European final and turned to [his late wife] Cathy, saying, 'This is what I long for -- the big matches, the European competitions.'"

I attended many of the European finals because I felt a connection to them; they represent something I wish I could experience regularly. These are the major occasions that Manchester United should always be part of.

Ferguson is recognized as the most accomplished manager in English football history, securing 13 league championships during his tenure at United, along with two Champions League victories, five FA Cup wins, and four League Cup titles.

Since he left in 2013, Manchester United has faced difficulties in both winning trophies and maintaining a reliable performance level. Throughout this period, the club has seen several permanent managers in charge, including David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and currently, Erik ten Hag.

United will head to Selhurst Park on Saturday to face Crystal Palace.
