Cristiano Ronaldo left the Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Stadium quickly without taking his second-place medal after his team, Al-Nassr, lost 4-1 in the Saudi Super Cup final on Saturday.
The 39-year-old was aiming to win his second trophy after moving to Saudi Arabia in January 2023, following his victory in the Arab Club Champions Cup last season.
Ronaldo scored his opening goal of the season during Wednesday's 2-0 victory against Al-Taawoun in the Super Cup semi-final. He then scored another goal shortly before half-time, giving Al-Nassr a 1-0 lead in the final on Saturday.
However, Al-Hilal, who were champions of the Saudi Pro League last season without experiencing any losses, responded by scoring four goals in the second half. Two of those goals were scored by former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.
Captain Ronaldo looked clearly displeased as the goals kept going in.
Cristiano Ronaldo led his team, Al-Nassr, in the Saudi Super Cup match on Saturday against Al-Hilal, but unfortunately they were defeated.
The 39-year-old player scored the first goal of the game, but his team ultimately lost 4-1 against their rivals from Riyadh.
Ronaldo departed from the Prince Sultan bin Abdul Aziz Stadium without receiving his second-place medal.
Ronaldo angrily signaled to his teammates after Al-Hilal scored four goals in the second half.
In Ronaldo's favor, Al-Hilal's fourth goal came about due to some very poor performance by his teammates.
Following a failed try at starting an attack from the defense which led to goalkeeper Bento losing possession to Malcom near the goal, Ronaldo took a step back and signaled to his teammates that they had been inactive.
Following the match, Al-Nassr's team members were awarded medals for achieving second place in the tournament with four teams.
However, Ronaldo, a previous player for Real Madrid and Manchester United, did not show any desire to collect his trophy, so he left the stadium without taking it with him.
Ronaldo's experience at Al-Nassr has been a bit of a rollercoaster so far.
The number of goals he has scored is really amazing. He has now scored 66 goals in 72 matches for the team in Riyadh, and he also won the Golden Boot in the Saudi Pro League last season.
Yet, Al-Nassr ended up five points behind Al-Ittihad, who were the champions, in Ronaldo's debut season, even though they were leading the table before he joined. In the following 2023-24 season, they finished 14 points behind Al-Hilal.
Ronaldo teased his Al-Nassr teammates by making a gesture that suggested they were not alert or active on the field.
Ronaldo has also felt upset by the way rival fans have treated him while he has been in Saudi Arabia.
In most of Al-Nassr's games on the road last season, fans from the other team were mocking Ronaldo by cheering for his rival Lionel Messi.
The last match on Saturday, which took place in an impartial location, was just the same.
Al-Nassr will kick off their new season in the Saudi Pro League on Thursday as they welcome Al-Raed to their home stadium.
Ronaldo and his teammates are also set to participate in the King's Cup and Champions League Elite during this season.
Competition in Saudi Arabia has surged in the past 19 months following Ronaldo's arrival in the country.
Many famous players have joined the Portuguese icon in moving from Europe to the Arab Gulf state, such as Neymar, Sadio Mane, Riyad Mahrez, Marcelo Brozovic, and Aymeric Laporte.
The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which holds ownership stakes in Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal, Al-Ahli, Al-Ittihad, and Newcastle United in the Premier League, has been responsible for many of the high-value transfers.
Ever since Ronaldo moved to Saudi Arabia in January 2023, he has scored 66 goals in 72 matches for Al-Nassr.
However, he has only secured one team trophy after being part of two unsuccessful Pro League championship attempts.
Recently, there was news that the PIF made an attempt to convince Vinicius Junior to leave Real Madrid for Al-Ahli. They offered him a five-year contract worth €1 billion in hopes of luring him away.
Vinicius reportedly turned down the offer that would have matched Ronaldo's yearly salary at Al-Nassr, which is around €200m.
