Wissa penalty helps DR Congo into Afcon last four

The national football team of DR Congo managed to recover from a losing position to defeat Guinea with a score of 3-1, securing a place in the semi-finals at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2023.

In the 20th minute of the match, Mohamed Bayo scored for Guinea from a penalty given due to a foul from Chancel Mbemba. Shortly after, Mbemba scored a goal for his own team from a difficult angle, bringing the score to a tie.

During the second half of the match, there was a penalty for DR Congo. This was due to Julian Jeanvier causing Silas to trip. Yoane Wissa from Brentford then scored the penalty, putting the Leopards in the lead and leaving 25 minutes on the clock.

The West African team didn't have much of a reaction when they fell behind, and the game was doomed when Arthur Masuaku's free-kick from the left side managed to catch Guinea goalkeeper Ibrahim Kone off-guard and score.

The national football team of the Democratic Republic of Congo had not won any of their previous four games in Ivory Coast, but managed to defeat Egypt by scoring more penalties during the last 16 match. As a result, they are getting ready for their first semi-final appearance since the Central African team secured third place in 2015.

The team led by Sebastien Desabre is set to play against the victorious team from Mali and Ivory Coast (who are hosting the game), on Wednesday for the semi-finals. The quarter-final match is expected to be played on Saturday at 17:00 GMT.

Two Penalty Stories

At the start of the game, Guinea asked the referee to award them a penalty after the ball accidentally touched Mbemba's hand. However, the referee did not agree with their appeal. Later on, Wissa from DR Congo missed a chance to score. Soon after that, Guinea was granted a penalty, but it was considered by many to be an undeserved decision.

Bayo was feeling the heat from Mbemba as he fell to the ground while trying to reach Ibrahim Diakite's pass. The referee, Mustapha Ghorbal, made a controversial call by saying that Mbemba's push in the back constituted a foul.

Despite the Congolese team's protests, the Video Assistant Referee did not interfere. After a short wait, Bayo scored his third goal of the finals by striking the ball to the right of the center.

Yet, Mbemba redeemed himself after Masuaku's corner kick landed near the distant post where the ex-Newcastle defender struck a forceful left-footed shot right into the top of the goal.

Facinet Conte missed an amazing opportunity to score and give Guinea the lead when he couldn't kick the ball properly after being given a good pass. Just one minute after that, DR Congo got a penalty because Jeanvier recklessly stopped Silas from running forward.

During his approach, Wissa experienced a slight speech impediment. However, he managed to shoot the ball into the lower left corner of the net. Guinea, who had not made it to the quarter-finals since 2015, had difficulty finding a counterattack even after substituting in Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy.

Masuaku secured the victory with only eight minutes left in the game. His shot had an unpredictable movement on the ball due to his left foot, which made it difficult for Kone to save. Even though Kone hoped to prevent the goal, he was unable to keep the ball out of the net.

In the final moments of the game, Guirassy attempted a header that was deflected away, possibly due to his injury. In addition, Silas had an opportunity to score a fourth goal but missed his shot from close range.
