Pop Star Love: A Robot-like Feeling In "The Idea Of You"

Anne Hathaway plays the role of a curator who develops feelings for a pop-star that resembles Harry Styles in a charming romantic comedy that lacks humor but heavily relies on typical romantic elements.

In the upcoming film titled "The Idea of You" set to be released in 2024, we will see Nicholas Galitzine portraying the character of Hayes, while Anne Hathaway will be seen as Solène.

The author of The Idea Of You, Robinne Lee, has denied that her book is based on Harry Styles fan fiction, but the forthcoming film adaptation appears to fuel the rumors. The story centers around Soléne, a 40-year-old woman who owns an art gallery. Soléne receives VIP passes to attend Coachella from her former spouse and, while searching for the restroom, accidentally enters the trailer of Hayes Campbell, the most famous member of British boy band August Moon. Director Michael Showalter is known for his fondness of romantic scenes in his movies, as displayed in interracial comedy The Big Sick and queer romance Spoiler Alert. From this encounter, Soléne and Hayes gradually fall in love in a generic manner. As two people with a 16-year age difference, they encounter obstacles ranging from evading the paparazzi to dealing with hostile fan bases and societal criticism.

The concept of The Idea of You is not precisely a rom-com since it disregards jokes in favour of sentimental gazes and intense smooches in the rain, which don't go against romantic stereotypes but rather glorify them. Sadly, this implies that every aspect of the movie, persona, and plot methods bring to mind many more captivating flicks that portray longing with more effectiveness.

Using a sweet and pure attitude towards love can result in insincere and immature behavior, which contradicts attempts to promote female empowerment. Soléne's friend Tracy joked about the negative reaction from the media towards contented women. Discussions regarding the negative impact of the internet and the unusual relationships between celebrities and their supporters lack relevance and seem out of place when compared to the life of a well-known boy band member.

The filmmakers appear to be avoiding any criticism regarding the significant age difference between the characters by emphasizing Hayes's maturity and wealth to equalize their power dynamic. However, Hathaway's portrayal of Soléne as an innocent and unburdened businesswoman and single mother seems contrary to her background. With her flawlessly styled appearance and lack of emotional baggage, she appears disconnected from reality, similar to Hayes's celebrity image.

The movie has its good parts. It has cute moments and intimate scenes that make the characters' love story believable and endearing. However, the comparison between Hayes and a famous musician gives the film an odd and unnatural feel that takes away from its romantic and charming elements.

You can now stream The Idea of You on Amazon Prime.
