Plymouth stun Championship leaders Leicester City

Plymouth Argyle vs Leicester City

Since Mustapha Bundu joined Argyle in the summer, he has only scored three goals, and his latest goal was his first in over four months.

Plymouth Argyle gave a massive advantage to their chances of survival in the Championship and put a dent in the hopes of automatic promotion for the leading team, Leicester City, by winning 1-0 at Home Park.

After being dominated in the beginning of the game, Argyle managed to score first thanks to Mustapha Bundu's composed shot using his right foot, which concluded a fantastic counter-attack.

Patson Daka from Leicester was given two amazing opportunities to tie the game in the first 20 minutes of the second half, however, the opposing team's defense persistently kept the Foxes at bay. As a result, the Leicester side became increasingly annoyed.

The goalie for the Argyle team, Michael Cooper, performed admirably by preventing substitute player Jamie Vardy from scoring in the 87th minute. Despite applying pressure towards the end of the game, the visiting team was unable to score a goal.

The Foxes have experienced another setback with their second consecutive loss on the road after their defeat against Millwall on Tuesday. As a result, they remain at the top of the table but are still on 88 points.

Ipswich Town and Leeds United have the same number of points while the Foxes are one point ahead. Both teams have opportunities to surpass the Foxes this Saturday when Blackburn visits Leeds and Middlesbrough goes to Ipswich.

Argyle's record has remained untainted in their recent three games following the dismissal of Ian Foster as the team's head coach, resulting in a total of seven points out of nine.

Plymouth has won the game, with Neil Dewsnip who is the director of football and Kevin Nancekivell who is the first-team coach taking over on a temporary basis, now they have moved from the 20th position to the 16th position. This win has given them a five-point advantage over the relegation zone.

The team from Leicester received news earlier in the day that they would not receive a punishment for financial matters this season. They demonstrated their determination from the beginning of the match, with Daka attempting a goal in the sixth minute that was disallowed due to being offside. Shortly thereafter, Ricardo Pereira made a great attempt, resulting in a great save by Cooper following a quick exchange with Wilfried Ndidi.

Argyle took the lead despite Foxes dominating possession. Two out of five players who were recalled to the team following Tuesday's draw with QPR collaborated to score.

Adam Forshaw made an outstanding pass from the central area that allowed Bundu to move rapidly down the left-hand side of the pitch. The Sierra Leone forward entered the penalty area from the left and skillfully placed the ball into the bottom corner while the defender Wout Faes remained too far away to stop him.

Leicester kept control of the ball and both Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Harry Winks attempted to score from afar, but they had difficulty converting their possession into opportunities that could lead to a goal.

As the noise in Home Park increased, the home team had the opportunity to score another goal five minutes before the end of the first half. Morgan Whittaker and Forshaw worked well together and passed the ball to each other on the edge of the box. However, Whittaker missed the goal as he shot the ball too high above the bar.

At the beginning of the second half, the hosts played more aggressively and increased the pressure on the Foxes. However, it was actually Leicester who had a chance to tie up the score ten minutes into the half. Daka missed a close-range shot after Abdul Fatawu had successfully made it to the right byeline.

Dennis Praet was replaced and came on for the opposing team. Shortly thereafter, Daka had another great opportunity to score, but unfortunately missed by slicing the ball too wide at the far post. Praet helped set up the chance by flicking the ball on.

For a significant amount of time, Leicester stayed in the opponent's territory but were unsuccessful in locating an effective pass due to the home team's defensive efforts. The hosts continuously sacrificed their bodies and caused the Foxes to make errors.

In the last stages of the match, Vardy made a strong attempt to score but Cooper came forward to block the former England striker. Argyle managed to hold on for an unforgettable victory that excited their supporters. Their fans now have great confidence that the team can avoid relegation, especially after a difficult three months under Foster's management, which resulted in a drop in their league position.

Neil Dewsnip, the football director of Plymouth Argyle, shared with BBC Sport his thoughts.

I'm thrilled. We were fully aware of how challenging it would be.

We were aware that we would face a remarkable football squad with excellent ball control abilities, however, we had a strategic approach to the game and fortunately, it proved successful.

Last night belonged to us, and I'm very pleased for our team. They put in a tremendous amount of effort, more than they might have even realized they were capable of.

We are aware that our work is unfinished, that's why we will put in extra effort in the upcoming three games to gather additional points.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Enzo Maresca, the manager of Leicester City, stated:

This past week has been challenging for us as we experienced back-to-back losses that caught us off guard.

We are disappointed, but at least we still have control of the situation.

To emerge victorious in our games, we must capitalize on every opportunity presented to us.

At this present time, we are finding it difficult to hit the back of the net, however, we have managed to generate opportunities within close proximity to the goal, inside the penalty area, and also from outside the box.

Tonight's game was a must-win regardless of the outcome. Our victory was critical and there was no room for defeat.

The good news is that we have control over the outcomes of the remaining four games.
