Olly Alexander Interviewed: Insights Shared

What are your thoughts on representing the United Kingdom for Eurovision 2024?

I am extremely happy to be the representative of the United Kingdom with my song 'Dizzy'. Frankly, it feels like a surreal experience, almost like a dream. Since childhood, I have been an avid viewer of Eurovision and the fact that I will now be performing on that stage and carrying my nation's banner, makes me feel a bit emotional but intrigued as well.

Can you share with us the story behind your track 'Dizzy'? What does it signify for you personally?

The tune 'Dizzy' is all about being smitten with someone who has taken your heart by storm, leaving you feeling completely overwhelmed. They've turned your world on its head, and the dreamy experience is what the song explores. I adore the track and can't wait to showcase it with a live performance.

What kind of results can we anticipate from your presentation?

In my opinion, the key factor in Eurovision is to distinguish oneself, that's why I'm striving for my act to be exceedingly remarkable. My goal is to take the spectators off guard and captivate their attention.

I aim to create an unforgettable experience for my audience and ideally, inject some excitement into the show while conveying the emotions of the music.

Have you ever visited Sweden?

I have had the good fortune to visit Sweden on numerous occasions. It is a stunning nation. I've had the opportunity to perform there during my tours on multiple occasions. Recently, I did a show at Gröna Lund in Stockholm, a well-known Swedish venue that has hosted legendary musicians such as Elton John, Prince, and Jimi Hendrix. And now, I can add myself to that impressive list! I had an amazing time and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Do you have any customary practices prior to performing? Are there any talismans or lucky items that you plan to bring along to Malmö?

Before I go on stage, I only have one routine that I always follow. I hug whoever is accompanying me on stage and take some deep breaths to calm my nerves. Additionally, my mother has given me a Swedish good luck charm, which is a wooden statue of a horse named Dala horse. I will definitely bring it with me to Sweden.

Have you given the competition a listen?

I've heard every single song from all the artists in this year's Eurovision and I must say, there are so many incredible tunes by amazing musicians. It seems like the competition is quite intense.

Who is your preferred Eurovision singer from the past that you would enjoy singing a duet with?

Wow, there are so many amazing former Eurovision participants that I'd be thrilled to collaborate with. If I had to choose just one, I'd definitely pick Mahmood, who has represented Italy on multiple occasions. I really admire his talent as an artist.

Which Eurovision song do you like the most out of all the songs that have ever been featured in the contest?

Selecting just one song from the numerous amazing ones is a daunting task! However, I'm going to opt for the one that sparked my passion and adoration for Eurovision. This dates back to my childhood when I was six or seven years old watching the competition. That year, the UK representative, Gina G, took the stage with her hit single 'Ooh Aah... Just A Little Bit.'

How was the experience of hosting Eurovision in your own country last year?

Last year's Eurovision contest was an exceptional experience as it was hosted in our own country. The moments that truly stood out for me were when the entire arena erupted in song with "You'll Never Walk Alone" and the incredible reaction that Mae Muller received after her performance. That kind of response was totally unique and unforgettable.

Do you believe that the hosting of Eurovision in Liverpool last year has sparked a newfound fondness for the competition among UK viewers?

In my opinion, Eurovision has always been a cherished event for the United Kingdom. Holding the Grand Final in Liverpool only amplified that adoration. It is my hope that people come together this year to support Olly and show him their encouragement.

Have you had the chance to visit Sweden previously?

I've just visited Sweden during the time they were hosting Eurovision, if I can recall correctly. Therefore, this will be my third time going there. I'm very excited and eager for it since they always organize an exceptional event.

What's your opinion on the UK's entry for this year?

It's a fantastic beginning to have an authentic pop star representing the UK this year. Olly has already experienced all the things that cannot be fully prepared for. He has performed in front of massive crowds, he is comfortable with the cameras, and he is accustomed to high-pressure scenarios. Furthermore, the song is incredibly catchy, which leads me to believe that we have a good chance of succeeding this year.

Apart from the United Kingdom, do you have any other entries that are your personal favorites this year?

During this year, many nations are attempting to match the craziness of Finland's submission from the previous year (Cha Cha Cha.) Personally, I believe a grand ballad like France's Mon Amour has a high chance of success. Nonetheless, I also harbor affection for Nemo, Switzerland's contender, and recommend keeping an eye on Belgium as well!

Which one gives you more anxiety - the Eurovision championship or having a conversation with well-known celebrities?

In my opinion, the anxiety experienced while performing in Eurovision is vastly dissimilar to that of my solo shows. I find that being in the presence of prominent personalities can be quite daunting, but nothing can compare to the challenge of a live broadcast that can extend to almost four hours. There is no chance to make any alterations. Everything one utters is audible to others, and as the night progresses, it tends to get tougher to recall that fact.

Can you recall any special moments of ABBA that you cherish since they won the competition in Brighton 50 years ago?

ABBA holds a unique position in our hearts, and their musical journey has been quite remarkable. They went from producing popular songs that some considered tacky, to making genuinely respected music once more. It's hard to think of another band that's accomplished the same thing. Their holograms drawing in sold-out crowds night after night is proof of how much esteem ABBA garners from their fans.
