Who is Julian Assange?

Julian Assange is an Australian activist and journalist who rose to international fame as the founder and editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks. Born in 1971 in Townsville, Australia, Assange founded WikiLeaks in 2006 with the goal of publishing classified government and corporate documents, as well as information leaked by anonymous whistleblowers, in the public interest.

Assange's work has been controversial and he has faced numerous legal and political challenges, particularly after WikiLeaks released thousands of classified US government documents in 2010. After seeking asylum in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden on charges of sexual assault, Assange was arrested by British police in 2019 and is currently awaiting extradition to the United States on charges related to espionage and hacking.
