Joely Richardson was born on January 9, 1965, in London, England. She is the daughter of British actress Vanessa Redgrave and late director Tony Richardson. Her sister, Natasha Richardson, was also an actress. Richardson trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and started her acting career in theatre productions such as "The Cherry Orchard" and "Anna Christie".

Richardson rose to fame after appearing in the television series "Nip/Tuck" as Julia McNamara.
