Local elections 2024: full council results for England

Election Results

The seating metrics are as follows: there are 1841 seats in total, with a gain of zero seats and a loss of three seats. The remaining three seats are held. Additionally, there are 4004 seats, and no seats in the 0000 category. Last but not least, there are 10,228 seats counted.

On the second day of May, 107 councils in England conducted elections wherein over 2,000 seats were up for grabs. The elections covered various types of councils, like the metropolitan boroughs including Manchester city council and the unitary authorities like Bristol or Dorset. These councils are single-tier authorities that are accountable for delivering a broad spectrum of council services such as education, social care, garbage collection, and parks.

The district councils recently held elections for 58 of their seats. District councils have less authority compared to other councils, but they still make decisions on important issues such as housing, recycling, and planning. They regularly hold elections where one-third of the seats are up for election every year, and a new council is elected after four years. The upper tier council, which is usually the county council, is also elected in the fourth year.

Elections were held in London for the London Assembly and 11 mayors, including those of London, Greater Manchester, and Liverpool. The way people voted has changed since the last time elections were held. Now, they are elected based on a first-past-the-post system. Elections were also held for police and crime commissioners.

The Labour party faced defeat in a Westminster byelection held in this area during 2021. However, the recent success in securing control of the council has provided them with hope that the party can regain support in the "red wall" regions.

The number of seats defended by the Conservatives in this region decreased by two-thirds. This council, which encompasses Grimsby, was known to be Labour-dominated, but the Conservatives managed to maintain it in the past few years.

The party which held the small majority in this region has been defeated. The local community is dominated by a significant Muslim population, and it has been acknowledged by Labour representatives that their position on Gaza may have played a role in their loss.

It was noted that this particular town, located in between Birmingham and Stratford, was being aimed for by the Labour Party. Nevertheless, the amount of losses suffered by the Conservative Party was potentially unforeseen.

The region which includes Farnborough and Aldershot in Hampshire is known for its Conservative affiliation. If the Labour Party were to win here, it would be a cause for concern at the Conservative Headquarters.

According to Labour, this region that has been a battleground for many years is "precisely the type of location we must win" in order to achieve a majority in Westminster.

As the election approached, Labour were looking optimistic being ahead in the nation-wide polls. In the initial stages, they received affirmative outcomes in Hartlepool and Rushmoor. Further down the line, they eagerly awaited the results from locations like Dudley - where they first began their campaign - along with other key sites including Milton Keynes, Hyndburn, and the standard bearer Nuneaton.

It was expected that the Conservatives would lose around half of the 1,000 council seats that they were defending. Therefore, their limited gains in some areas are not shocking. Although they did lose seats in some places, the fact that they maintained majority control in Harlow and Fareham will likely provide some comfort.

Keep an eye out for possible areas that the Liberal Democrats might make progress in, like Dorset, Tunbridge Wells, and Wokingham. This progress would demonstrate that the party is making inroads in important areas leading up to the general election. The early results showed significant gains in Winchester, giving the centrist party reason for optimism.

In the initial findings, it seems that the Green Party has gained more support in multiple regions of England. The Greens have set their sights on achieving progress in Bristol, which is their main objective. They already have a considerable presence in the city and are eagerly waiting to acquire official control. Furthermore, they are likely to make gains in other key regions like Stroud, Worcester, and Hastings.

PA Media newswire (PA) has presented these findings. They have used the current council composition as a basis for determining the change in seats. However, other organizations use the previous election as a reference point, which may cause divergences in their calculations.

When it comes to reporting election results, the PA only releases them once the full count is done for each council. And it's worth noting that the PA only puts together results for elections that were scheduled during this particular election cycle. That means there could be some by-election results from various parts of the country that don't make it into the PA's reports. Lastly, ward boundaries can and do change pretty regularly, which in turn might lead to changes in the total number of councillors serving a given area.
