Conservative Member of Parliament and previous minister, Dan Poulter, has switched his allegiance to Labour, causing a setback for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak mere days before a critical set of local elections.

A mental health physician named Poulter has announced that he will be resigning from his position. He expressed that he could not continue working alongside his NHS colleagues and patients while feeling morally justified, as he believes that the Conservative government no longer places importance on public services.

His departure from the party is a disappointment for Sunak, who is attempting to unite his party prior to the upcoming local elections in England and Wales on May 2. Surveys indicate that the Conservative party may face significant defeats.

Poulter, who is a Member of Parliament for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich, emerged victorious with a 23,391 vote lead over his Labour opponent during the 2019 election. He has stated unequivocally that he will continue to champion the interests of his constituents as a Labour MP. He further announced his decision to relinquish his seat at the subsequent election.

In an interview with BBC's Laura Kuenssberg, Poulter expressed that he didn't hold any ill feelings towards Sunak. However, he strongly advocated for an early election to ensure that the NHS is under the leadership of Sir Keir Starmer, the current leader of the Labour party.

Starmer expressed his satisfaction with Poulter's announcement made on Saturday afternoon, stating that it is now time to put an end to the disorder caused by the Conservative party, move on and ensure a brighter future for Britain.

As a former health minister in the coalition government led by David Cameron, Poulter expressed that he struggled to maintain a sense of integrity when interacting with his colleagues in the NHS, his patients, and his constituents.

He stated that the Conservative party is facing a challenge because the group he joined when he was elected placed importance on public services. Additionally, they had a caring perspective on assisting those who are less fortunate in society.

In my opinion, the present state of the Conservative party is entirely dissimilar.

When questioned about why he chose not to resign from his position as an MP and initiate a by-election, Poulter replied that he came to the conclusion that it would be more beneficial to his constituents if he continued to work for them until the end of this parliamentary term, considering that an election is looming in the near future.

Sources from the Conservative Party asserted that Poulter did not perform much work for his area or in the parliamentary proceedings. They hinted that he switched to the Labour Party because Sunak had no intentions of nominating him for a position in the House of Lords.

According to Sunak's supporters, the prime minister had a string of triumphs last week by introducing new policies such as reforms to the welfare system and an increase in defense spending. Additionally, he managed to secure the Rwanda bill receiving Royal Assent.

Poulter switching to the Labour Party is expected to have a significant impact on the political discourse. One reason for this is the ex-Conservative member’s apparent intention to tarnish Sunak’s standing on the issue of the NHS before leaving.

In recent years, there have been a few instances of Conservative MPs switching to a different party. In 2021, Lee Anderson, who used to serve as the deputy chair of the Conservative party, decided to leave and join Reform UK. Another Conservative MP, Christian Wakeford, followed suit and jumped ship to join the Labour party in 2022.

The Conservative party expressed their disappointment for the people residing in Central Suffolk and North Ipswich. They disagreed with Dan's statement as they believed that Sir Keir Starmer had no strategy for the NHS.

A Conservative insider mentioned that it's regrettable Dan didn't put in more effort to attend parliament and fulfill his responsibilities, especially since he appears to have strong convictions regarding our healthcare system. Evidently, he must have had other priorities lately.

Many of the Members of Parliament believed that he had already departed from the Parliament.

The Conservative party feels certain that they will win the seat during the upcoming election. This seat is known to be one of the most secure and predictable in the entire country.
