Wright double beats Millwall as Coventry hit top six

Coventry City

Haji Wright scored two goals, which increased his total goals for Coventry City to 11 this season.

The Coventry City team had a challenging match against Millwall. They had to recover from being behind on the scoreboard, but Haji Wright quickly scored two goals in just three minutes. These goals secured Coventry City's victory and moved them up to sixth place in the Championship rankings.

Even though they had plenty of opportunities, the team led by Mark Robins appeared to be at risk of losing due to a goal scored by teenager Romain Esse in the first half.

Wright got tangled up with Millwall defender Japhet Tanganga in the penalty area and fell down, leading to him being awarded a penalty in the 67th minute.

After sending Matija Sarkic to the wrong direction from the penalty spot, American player Wright scored the decisive goal in the 70th minute with a shot towards the near post that surpassed Sarkic's feeble attempt to block it. This goal marked his 11th of the season.

City managed to avoid losing another match at home and climbed up to the sixth position. However, Millwall is not doing so well as they have now gone six games without a win, and are currently in the 18th position.

The triumph of Coventry was unquestionably a result of their absolute control.

They could have taken the lead in the beginning as there was a lot of chaos in front of the goal. Tatsuhiro Sakamoto attempted a shot but it was blocked, then Wright tried to score with the rebound but hit the left post. The ball bounced off the post and hit the woodwork again before Sarkic caught it safely.

However, Michael Obafemi from Millwall almost scored with a shot directed at Coventry keeper Brad Collins. Afterwards, the visitors surprised everyone by taking the lead.

Millwall's goalkeeper Sarkic initiated the play by making a long pass. Flemming received the ball on the left and passed it back towards the center. Esse then took a strong and accurate shot with his right foot, which hit Luis Binks's leg and changed direction, going past Collins, who couldn't stop it.

Afterwards, Obafemi had a golden opportunity to score his second goal but he hit the ball straight towards Collins. Later, Victor Torp from Coventry attempted a free-kick which was stopped by Sarkic through a great save. Kasey Palmer also made an attempt to score but unfortunately, his shot got deflected off Wes Harding's head and went out for a corner.

After the break, the home team had more opportunities to score. Callum O'Hare passed the ball to Sakamoto, who tried to shoot but Sarkic stopped the ball. Then Torp made a shot from near the area, but it was redirected wide.

However, right when the frustration of the local supporters seemed to be on the rise, Wright tumbled inside the penalty area - and successfully converted the ensuing penalty kick by directing the ball towards the right corner of the net.

After three minutes, O'Hare spotted Wright, who was unguarded on the left side of the field. Even though Sarkic was able to extend his right hand to try and block the shot, the ball still made its way into the lower left corner of the net.

On Wednesday, the Championship resumes with both teams getting back in action.

The Coventry team is heading to Devon for a game against Plymouth Argyle, while Millwall is hosting the team Ipswich town who are eager to move up a division.

According to BBC CWR, Mark Robins, who is the manager of Coventry City, stated that...

Achieving our goal wasn't easy. Our strategy aimed at playing fast, but they contested it in a challenging way.

We were close to losing the game since our opponents had a few opportunities. However, Haji made a quick move and was fouled, resulting in a penalty. I believed that the penalty was a clear decision.

Before deciding who would take the penalty, there was a little game of rock, paper, scissors played. However, the player who eventually took it had prior experience taking penalties in Turkey and knew exactly what to do. Afterwards, our team had other opportunities to score as well. Haji almost even had three goals as he hit the post in addition to his other shots.

"By the way, the field is not in good condition and requires maintenance. We need to put in some effort to improve it."

On BBC Radio London, Joe Edwards, the manager of Millwall, stated:

The presence of danger emanating from Coventry City is undeniable, but making things difficult for them by visiting their grounds was a successful move.

We have had numerous strong starts to our games and Romain Esse capitalized on his chance to score. Additionally, we had other opportunities to score."

We've demonstrated our ability to compete with every team in the league, but we need to maintain this level of performance more frequently.

The penalty challenge was not particularly tough, and there is no reason to protest about it. The player was on the incorrect side, so the referee was inevitably going to award the penalty.
