Christopher Nolan wins his first ever Oscar for directing Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan has received the prestigious award for best director at the Academy Awards held in Los Angeles. The movie for which he was awarded is Oppenheimer.

For the initial time, Nolan has claimed the award after being a nominee for Dunkirk in 2018. He was anticipated to take home the trophy as he had won numerous best director awards before the Oscars, such as a Golden Globe, Bafta, Critics Choice award, and Directors Guild of America prize. At the Oscars, Nolan surpassed a solid contender lineup, including Martin Scorsese (for Killers of the Flower Moon), Justine Triet (for Anatomy of a Fall), and Yorgos Lanthimos (for Poor Things).

Nolan was involved in the production and writing of Oppenheimer, a film about the renowned nuclear scientist J Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy. Oppenheimer was the director of the secret Los Alamos laboratory that created the first atomic bombs. The film was highly praised upon its release, receiving a four-star review from Peter Bradshaw at the Guardian and described as a "towering achievement" by Wendy Ide at the Observer. Along with Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie, which was promoted with the hashtag #Barbenheimer, Oppenheimer was a major commercial success, earning a total revenue of $960.6m.

Nolan expressed his gratitude to the team who worked on the movie including his wife and producer Emma Thomas. He mentioned how film has only been around for a little more than one hundred years and that being recognized by the Academy as a significant contributor to the industry was incredibly meaningful to him.
