The 'Challengers' Knee-Pop Has Haunted Me for Months

Challengers

I feel it's time to express my honest thoughts: The movie Challengers has been staying with me since I watched it in February. The scene where Tashi Duncan, portrayed by Zendaya, injures her knee during a college tennis match has been haunting me. I am prepared to share my intense encounter watching this exceptional film. I urge you to listen and take heed of my cautionary tale.

For those who haven't been online lately, Luca Guadagnino's movie Challengers follows three tennis players named Tashi, Art (played by Mike Faist), and Patrick (played by Josh O'Connor) as they progress from being amateur teenage tennis players to adult professionals, with Tashi being their source of inspiration. The film demonstrates how Tashi has a significant influence on these two men and manipulates them after her own aspirations are broken. It works because, without giving away too much, the two men essentially become infatuated with Tashi, which is understandable since the actress playing her is breathtakingly beautiful.

I was uncertain about what to expect when I saw the trailer ten months ago. However, my curiosity got the better of me and I clicked on it quickly because I was excited to see what Zendaya had in store for us. As I was watching the trailer, something shocking occurred: the most intense knee-pop I have ever seen. The sound of it made me sweat and feel a little sick. I had a hard time watching the last minute of the trailer and it even made me question whether or not I could handle watching the entire movie with that moment in it.

As soon as you spot these two costumes in the movie, quickly head to the restroom.

Despite my reservations, I went ahead and watched the movie in mid-February because of my love for Zendaya. I had mixed emotions- both excitement and anxiety. I thought the infamous knee-pop would take place early on, but unfortunately, it didn't happen until almost an hour into the movie. By that point, I was incredibly worked up and sweating profusely during every tennis scene. When the moment finally arrived, I was so overwhelmed that I had to leave the screening room and take deep breaths to calm myself down. In truth, the experience was embarrassing and almost made me feel sick.

Since I watched the movie several months ago, a particular scene has been on my mind. Whenever I come across an image or video clip related to the movie or its publicity tour, I can't help but think of it. What especially gets to me isn't just the sight of the knee dislocating, which is already pretty upsetting, but the sound that accompanies the moment. Whenever I hear it, I jump and cringe so hard that I worry I might injure myself unintentionally. As more and more people in my circle watch the movie, I find it increasingly difficult to discuss this scene without feeling anxious and sweating profusely.

Perhaps that's the magic of movies. The impact of the film is so intense that it puts me back into a state of anxiety when I discuss it, proving that the art is effective. It's possible that I should seek therapy to address this reaction as well. However, Luca, if you happen to see this, please think about showing the version of the movie without the knee-popping scene in cinemas. I'm willing to purchase 15 tickets.
